The newest album by Elvis Costello, Trust, is another of a new era in rock and roll. Over the past year, many rock and roll greats have begun to show new style and form in their work and most have found it necessary to put some of this new sound on vinyl.
Costello has been no exception. Trust is new wave in the way only Elvis could produce it. Sharp, clean, exciting rock and roll dance music are the trademark of all of his works and this is no exception.
Since Get Happy, Costello has been doing just that, writing happy music. Trust is very cheerful. Although it has some very profound messages. they can be easily ignored if the beat is all you can understand.
There is some reggae back beat on a few of the cuts of this album, but for the most part it is straight never ending rock with Presley overtones.
Although in the past Elvis could be somewhat abusive to his audience, he seems to have suppressed his outward contempt of social situations to his lyrics. In the cut "You'll Never Be a Man", he says, "Do you really feel so superior... are you really in that much pain." This says it all.
This album is produced by Nick Lowe of Rockpile and the featured vocalist is Glenn Tilbrook formerly of Squeeze. Elvis and the Attractions sold out three nights at the Garden just last week and if that can be any indication, I think this album will do well. Lyrically profound, musically superior, it is undoubtedly the year's best to date.
