Around the local rock scene

Stephen Hayward

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE! Elvis was in town the other night! Hot on the trail of his first British tour, The King played a one-night stand at the Nag’s Head in High Wycombe.

Elvis Costello, to give the guy his full name, is one of a rare breed of 70s rock’n’rollers – a performer whose songwriting ability and overall talent tends to outshine and out-class everything else within a zillion miles or so.

The Nag’s wasn’t as packed as it has been in the past, which was just as well. Occasionally it was almost impossible to breathe, and it was usually possible to move in a vertical direction. A lot of people had obviously come along to check-out Costello’s growing reputation.

They weren’t disappointed.

Listening to him run through his repertoire is a delightfully impressive experience, a rather similar feeling to attending your first big rock gig. A real EYE-OPENER.

Here are some of the numbers he aired: The Beat, Watching The Detectives, Lip Service and Blame It On Caine – and many, many others, equally as good but with less memorable names.

The Man’s backing band, the Attractions, were so hot they positively stung, tight as metronomes and eminently soulful.

Could this really be the Future of Rock and Roll?
