Goodbye Cruel World
Elvis Costello and The Attractions
The Chronicle
B
Elvis Costello and The Attractions' new album has few attractions and little excitement. In Goodbye Cruel World, Costello journeys into the center of the road and takes the listener on an uneventful ride where the music is smooth, but not interesting. Elvis certainly is not angry anymore, but he is somewhat bitter. The slightly misogynistic lyrical theme centers on the hopelessness of love. In his favor, Elvis does produce three excellent songs, "Inch By Inch," "Sour Milk Cow Blues" and "Deportee Club," and he does show some of his flair for cynical, incisive lyrics. Overall, Goodbye Cruel World has merit, but will disappoint Costello fans.
