Digging for victory

   Sounds

Elvis Costello is having fun in the States. He’d scarcely recovered from that little set-to in Chicago with Bonnie Bramlett, Steve Stills and the massed choir of the All American Roadies (which resulted in wide-spread allegations of racism against warm, home-loving Elvis – let’s not mention the 150 death threats, okay) then he ran into trouble with his record company.

A free gig had been planned for a New York concert hall with the tickets only available via written applications to a local radio station. However, a quarter of a million applications were received. So Jake Riviera suggested they move the show to Shea Stadium and asked the record company for the fifty thousand dollars they’d need to rent it. They refused. So Jake went out and bought a score of shovels and sent them to senior record company execs with the message “If you really want to bury my act I thought you could do with some help.”
