40 years on ........................................ We lack a couple of the shows that occurred between the Bristol show and this one - Poole, on the south coast of England would have proved another 300 mile-plus round trip from Truro and my job at the RCH and Cardiff where an ex girlfriend actually attended the gig and then had the nerve to tell me it was great but she couldn't remember much about it. 8-( Perhaps that was why she became an ex! So we have this from the Potteries where the audience always seems both boisterous and enthusiastic and indeed one can discern some heckling albeit good natured, judging by Elvis' response throughout the show. It's not up to the excellent Brighton and London recordings but it has it's own idiosyncratic attraction - no pun intended. After Steve and Elvis kick off with "Pills And Soap" we get the full orchestra on stage at once unlike the varied sequences seen earlier and the more usual "Let Them All Talk" but the brass section is actually quite hard to pick out and makes the clarity of the Attractions more forward which brings it's own bonuses. "Possession" which follows seems rather slow and I had to check twice to make sure it was at the right pitch - I'm not sure that pace suits the song along with the brass arrangement. Elvis introduces "Alison" this time as "a song by Sheena Easton, someone I really respect". Oh, really? In "From Head To Toe" there is definitely a male voice to be heard in the backing though whether this is Steve or Bruce I couldn't say. "Charm School" seems muffled at the start but clears up eventually, and "Oliver's Army" pays homage to the locale with the line "with the boys from the Mersey and the TRENT and the Tyne". "Shipbuilding" has, of all things, quite a drum heavy introduction and the main set ends with "Clubland". The concert then follows a predictable pattern to the end with the horns appearing to be more prominent (or else just plain louder) up to the "Pump It Up" finale. A trade received in the late 80s I have no knowledge of source unless something turns up like Andy giving us his knowledge of the Brighton show (thanks!)
