40 years on ............................................ The gig I might have gone to! My new job in the most Westerly county in the country meant I was reluctant to commit to a 340 mile round trip after a day at work and so this whole U.K. tour passed me by. I would have missed a priceless and rare snapshot of about 15 seconds of Elvis singing a snippet of a glitter rock classic but the show itself is the shortest concert of the whole tour and seems like it was the last show in an extended run of 4 nights in a row and 5 in six and is probably understandable. The show starts with Elvis and Steve performing the single from earlier in the year, "Pills And Soap" although this recording misses the start and then a one off performance on this tour of "Big Tears" as we get a similar arrangement of songs with The Attractions alone before the remaining guest musicians appear. Unfortunately there is a glitch in the middle of this classic B-side. Afrodiziak appear After "Shabby Doll" and sing Smokey Robinson's "From Head To Toe" and then the horns join and start "Let Them All Talk" with a false start. "The Greatest Thing" also has a couple of glitches as does "High Fidelity" which is the last song the brass section play on until the finale. After "Peace, Love And Understanding" Elvis says "Some people just don't get the message" before moving into "Shipbuilding". There's a little bit of "wow" on the line "diving for dear life". Elvis then seems a little hesitant when they start "Big Sister's Clothes" and after "Stand Down Margaret" the horns reappear to start "Backstabbers - King Horse" but Bruce inexplicably plays a riff which I think is from the TV Western programme "Bonanza" - no mean feat on the bass - though whether this is a dig at Bristol being in "the West Country", I don't know. "The World And His Wife" has Elvis' introduction missing and the main set ends with "Clubland". "Everyday" also has a few glitches in the final verse and "Pump It Up" contains the rare lines from a 70s hit single - never to be repeated. I think I got a copy of this in the mid 80s from a record fair in Bristol, Lineage: TDK D 90 Type I cassette > Nakamichi DR3 (no dolby) > Marantz DR 6000 CD Recorder > EAC > Nero Platinum for track separation and pitch adjustment > TLH > FLAC
