Lacht nicht, wenn Eure Eltern bei Glenn Miller-Musik verzückt die Augen verdrehen. Wer jemals eine Ader für die starke Popmusik zwischen 1960 und 1970 hatte, wird beim Anhören von Elvis Costello nicht viel anders aussehen. Daß die Popmusik in den 70er Jahren einen Knacks bekommen hat, von dem sie sich bis heute nicht erholt hat, ist auch die Devise von Nick Löwe. Der Mann mit dem absoluten Gefühl für ungekünstelte und eingängige Songs produzierte die Titel des bebrillen "Buddy Holly on the rocks" namens Elvis, so daß eigentlich jeder merken müßte, warum "Pop" heutzutage oft nur noch ein Schimpfwort sein kann.
Die Songs von Elvis Costello zeigen, was uns bei aller technischen Perfektion in der Musik verloren ging. In erster Linie ein Feeling, das vielleicht manchmal eine Spur zu naiv oder zu romantisch ist, aber in seiner intensiven Aussage eben voE ins Schwarze trifft. Genau wie die scheppernden,ungeheuer simplen nostalgischen Gitarren-Riffs, die ebenso zum Costello-Stil gehören wie ein neuzeitlicher Reggae-Anklang in "Less Than Zero". Bei Elvis Costello verschmelzen Erinnerungen an den herzzerreißenden Gesang der Everly Brothers, natürlich auch an Elvis I, an die Beatles und in erster Linie an die frühen Manfred Mann. Das liegt aber eindeutig daran, daß Elvis' Stimme und auch sein Stil den ersten Mann-Sängern Paul Jones und Mike d' Abo sehr ähnlich ist. Elvis rockt, Elvis swingt und singt so engagiert wie einst die Highschool Bands. Der musikalische Hintergrund reicht vom original 60er Sound bis hin zu leichten, modernen Arrangements mit flüssig gespielter Gitarre. Prinzip bleibt jedoch die unverfälschte Begleitung einer (zumindest auf Platte) ausdrucksstarken Pop-Stimme. Entscheidend für die Ausstrahlung der Costello-LP ist zuguterletzt die greifbare Nähe des Interpreten und der Musiker, die nicht zu einem anonymen Klangkörper zusammengemischt und geschliffen wurden. Denn ohne die glattbügelnden Studio-Mechanismen macht Popmusik plötzlich wieder reichlich Spaß.
