The new Elvis

Nick Olson

Sean MacManus was a computer punch-card operator in Hounslow, changed his name to Elvis Costello and found fame.

The legend may not be quite true but he comes over as the archetypal weakling who's been getting sand kicked in his face for too long. His songs of rejection and failure make compelling listening and already he is one of the country's established artists after just one year in the limelight.

His first defiant gesture, My Aim Is True was THE New Wave album last year, and "Watching The Detectives" was certainly one of the best singles. He's in action at Newcastle City Hall next Wednesday where he will be showcasing material from his latest album This Year's Model. His band, the Attractions have Eaglescliffe lad Bruce Thomas (ex-Quiver) on bass.
