Elvis Costello
Jon Bream
In 1975, Bruce Springsteen was the new hero of U.S. rock critics. England's Graham Parker was tapped as the new rock savior in 1976. And the critics' favorite last year was Elvis Costello, who will make his local debut Tuesday at Jay's Longhorn.
Costello, a 23-year-old former computer technician, is a curious character. He looks like a cross between Buddy Holly and Woody Allen. His rock 'n' roll music is angry and intense. And all of his songs are less than three minutes long.
All reports indicate Costello is a quirky performer. But don't judge him on his off-beat performance on Saturday Night Live in December. During the first song he performed, the band's electric organ was not plugged in. And then Costello changed his mind about what he should perform as his second song after he had already started one number. Quirky, indeed.
Also appearing will be Willie Alexander and the Boom Boom Band, a blues-styled rock quartet from Boston.
