It feels a lot like old times
Wayne Garcia
It's time for another abrupt turn for the Prince of Angry Young Men, the King of America, Declan MacManus, aka Elvis Costello.
There were the low-key efforts with T-Bone Burnett in the producer's chair, which produced excellent, if not exactly memorable, music. Most lately came Costello's weird foray into pseudoclassical music with a set of songs he did with the Brodsky Quartet.
Unlike his previous derivations, Costello pushes forward into the past with Brutal Youth, his first effort in years with the Attractions, the organ-pumping, drum-pounding unit that helped forge such great Costello discs as This Year's Model and Armed Forces.

A MIGHTY FINE EFFORT Series: AUDIO FILES
HELEN A.S. POPKIN
After three albums, Elvis Costello had already proved that he is a prodigy, like Mozart or the original Elvis. Unlike Mozart, Costello was not afforded the luxury of dying at the peak of his creativity, but with Mighty Like a Rose, it is doubtful he will be playing Vegas lounges anytime soon.
"Despite the contradiction and confusion/Felt tragic without reason/There's malice and magic in every season," from the first verse of the first song, The Other Side of Summer, not only exemplifies Costello's inimitable ability to combine free-flowing lyricism with dark overtones, but it is an apt summation of his career-long flirtation with angry isolationism.
