"He always knew he was a genius," said Elvis Costello's father recently. Until then, it was not entirely certain that Elvis even had a father, so hush-hush and tight-lipped was he about anything to do with his past.

His father, in fact is the 50-year-old club singer and musician Ross MacManus, and dad and son appeared together in the catchy R. White "secret lemonade drinker" television commercial made three years ago.
 
This unusual screen debut, however, was subsequently deeply burred without a memorial stone when, last year, Elvis left Hounslow in Middlesex to see if the world was ready for him. It wasn't. But Elvis was determined not to be discouraged by the details of his Messiah-like coming.
 
His first two singles, released by the small independent label with punk associations, Stiff Records, ...
