Elvis, Lowe sign for new label

Melody Maker

Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe, both very much a part of Stiff Records' success during the last year, have signed a new recording deal with Radar Records, formed recently by former United Artists managing director Martin Davis and A & R man Andrew Lauder.

Costello and Lowe are Radar's first signings, but Jake Riviera, co-founder of Stiff Records and manager of Costello and Lowe, retains the right to release material by the pair in America, Canada, Norway, Sweden and Finland. The move follows Jake Riviera's departure from Stiff Records a few months ago, when he left to concentrate on management.

Lauder said the signings came as a result of the coincidence of Costello and Lowe leaving Stiff and Radar Records being formed.

"Jake found out that Martin and I were leaving United Artists and asked us if we would be interested in Elvis and Nick, so we sat down and drew up a deal.

"We had both known Jake and Nick for several years, through Dr. Feelgood (Riviera was the tour manager) and Brinsley Schwarz, and we had helped Stiff at the beginning with the pressing of records, so we were always fairly close."

Costello and his band, the Attractions, are on a tour of America at the moment, where his debut album, My Aim Is True, has entered the charts two weeks after release.

Lowe has become one of the top producers in the country, as well as being an artist in his own right, and has produced albums by the Damned, Graham Parker and the Rumour and Dr. Feelgood during 1977.
