''' | Dass in Nashville nicht zwangsweise blutleerer Schlager-Country produziert wird, stellt Elvis Costello auf ''National Ransom'' unter Beweis. Den Briten mit der Brille hat es schon öfter in den Süden der USA verschlagen, auf der Suche nach Soul, dem Blues und allem anderen, das sich musikalisch rund um den Mississippi lokalisieren lässt. ''National Ransom'' spielt ein wenig mit der Vaudeville-Kultur des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts, die mit ihren Side-Shows auf dem Land ja noch eine Spur derber war als in den Metropolen. Dennoch, so richtiger Country ist hier kaum zu finden. Auf forschen Country-Rock wie "Five Small Words" folgt die eindringliche Ballade "Church Underground," es finden sich akustische Oasen wie "Bullets For The New-Born King" oderheitere Barroom-Stomper wie "The Spell That You Cast," in dem dann auch eine Costello-typisch eiernde Orgel auftaucht. Ein gutes Album, etwas zu lang, stellenweise trotz T{{nb}}Bone Burnetts Produktion zu glatt. Richtig gut wird es, wenn Costello sich wie in der Ballade "That's Not The Part Of Him You're Leaving" so richtig reinfühlt. | ||
