GOV'T MULE REVEALS GUEST ARTISTS ON DOUBLE ALBUM SHOUT!, OUT SEPTEMBER 24 ON BLUE NOTE RECORDS
Mule.net Pre-Order Here | Amazon.com Pre-Order.
July 11, 2013 - New York, NY - Shout! - Gov't Mule's first studio album in four years - will feature 11 tracks recorded by the band in Los Angeles and Stamford, CT plus a bonus disc featuring an all-star lineup of vocalists interpreting The Mule's new songs. Special guests Elvis Costello, Dr. John, Ben Harper, Toots Hibbert, Glenn Hughes, Jim James, Myles Kennedy, Dave Matthews, Grace Potter, Vintage Trouble's Ty Taylor and Steve Winwood appear on Disc 2 of Shout! The double album - which marks Gov't Mule's Blue Note Records debut - will be released on September 24. Shout! is available for pre-order now at mule.net and Amazon.com.
"No one's done this before, which is exciting," says singer-guitarist Warren Haynes, who co-founded Gov't Mule with drummer Matt Abts. The band also features keyboardist-guitarist Danny Louis and bassist Jorgen Carlsson. "But it's even more exciting actually listening to these artists sing our songs. Their performances bring new ideas, energy and sometimes even different meanings to every number."
The concept for the two-disc collection emerged organically as the band members considered how to best approach the songs. Haynes wasn't even certain "Funny Little Tragedy" belonged on a Gov't Mule album. "Not only is it different from anything Gov't Mule's ever done, it kind of reminded me of The Attractions or The Clash." With that in mind, he asked Elvis Costello for guidance on what kind of vocal mic he should use to get the late '70s-early '80s garage rock sound he was after.
"Elvis sent me a very elaborate response explaining how he recorded this vocal and how he recorded that vocal, going all the way back to My Aim is True," recalls Warren. "I was really happy to get his response and I wound up using the Shure SM58, which is about a $100 microphone, and it turned out great. That was the first seed that was planted for Shout! because from that point forward I started thinking it would be cool to hear Elvis sing this tune."
Haynes and Danny Louis had written "Scared to Live" as a Beatles-esque ballad, but Gordie Johnson, who co-produced four of the tracks with Haynes, suggested they approach it as a reggae song. They even added a new section towards the end of the track, which on playback seemed very reminiscent of Toots and the Maytals.
Warren considered asking Toots, who is a friend of his, to sing a part on the song, then was struck by the notion that tilted The Mule towards a two-disc set: What if he went through the new songs and made a list of artists he'd like to hear singing each song? After receiving a resounding "yes" from his band mates, he reached out to the singers, to see if they connected to the material and would consider participating. Haynes went into a New York studio with several of the vocalists and others contributed from afar.
"We've always taken a nontraditional approach to everything we've done, and it works for us," says Haynes. "One of things we're very proud of about this record is that all the songs stand up for themselves and have their own personality. Hopefully, hearing another singer interpret them helps shine even more of a light on the songs and somewhere in that picture people get a glimpse of what Gov't Mule does."
Gov't Mule has released nine critically acclaimed studio albums and an assortment of DVDs and live albums. The band has sold more than three million song downloads through their site MuleTracks and is the consummate live act, with sold-out coast-to-coast tours. Their "Prepare To Shout Tour" will take them to numerous festivals this summer. (See below for itinerary.)
In addition, Haynes will be involved with two other tours. The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration Featuring Warren Haynes is a groundbreaking orchestral adventure - curated by the Garcia family and Haynes - that will feature Warren performing the musical icon's storied original compositions as well as classic interpretations of timeless standards that were hallmarks of Garcia and the Grateful Dead's shows. The outing will pair Haynes with some of the country's most respected symphonies and a band assembled especially for the tour. In August and September, Haynes will be touring with the Allman Brothers Band, which he has been a member of since 1989.

Gov’t Mule Gets By On ‘Shout!’ With A Little Help From Friends: Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews & More
July 16, 2013 3:32 PM
“Gov’t Mule is almost finished with a new release that we’re hoping to have out in September. The upcoming tour is called ‘Prepare To Shout,’ the record is called Shout. I also think–at the risk of sounding cliche–this is possibly the best record we’ve ever done. The band feels great, sounds great. The significance of the title, Shout, is that we are going to create a bonus disc with alternate versions of the same songs with a bunch of different singers. The alternate versions will be someone other than myself singing.”
When Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes told us this a few weeks back, we were certainly curious over the identities of said guests. If a band could pick any artists to cover them, who would they pick?
Not that Haynes would reveal his big secret — and for good reason. The guest list, as Gov’t Mule just recently revealed, is a formidable one, including: classic rock legends Elvis Costello and Steve Winwood, reggae icon Toots Hibbert of Toots & The Maytals, New Orleans royalty Dr. John, along with Ben Harper, former Deep Purple member Glenn Hughes, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Myles Kennedy from Alter Bridge and also Slash‘s band, Dave Matthews, Grace Potter and Ty Taylor of Vintage Trouble.

The unconventional concept apparently began when Haynes asked Costello for microphone advice. One of the new songs, “Funny Little Tragedy,” reminded him of the Clash or Elvis from his Attractions era. So he asked Costello what kind of mic he should use to get the late ’70s/early ’80s vocal sound.
“Elvis sent me a very elaborate response explaining how he recorded this vocal and how he recorded that vocal, going all the way back to My Aim is True,” Haynes said in a statement. “I was really happy to get his response and I wound up using the Shure SM58, which is about a $100 microphone, and it turned out great. That was the first seed that was planted for Shout! because from that point forward I started thinking it would be cool to hear Elvis sing this tune.”
After that, Haynes mulled over the idea of asking Toots Hibbert to sing on the reggae-tinged “Scared To Live,” and from there got the idea to release the album as a two disc set, with other singers “covering” the new songs.
Shout! is due out September 24 on Blue Note Records.

The legendary Shure SM58® vocal microphone is designed for professional vocal use in live performance, sound reinforcement, and studio recording. Its tailored vocal response for sound is a world standard for singing or speech. A highly effective, built-in spherical filter minimizes wind and breath "pop" noise. A unidirectional (cardioid) pickup pattern isolates the main sound source while minimizing unwanted background noise.
Rugged construction, a proven shock-mount system, and a steel mesh grille ensure that even with rough handling, the SM58 will perform consistently, outdoors or indoors.

Lovely. Nice little MOMOFUKU vibe about it.
Re: Elvis on the new Gov´t Mule record!
Nice little track. Reminds me more of The Knack than The Attractions or the Clash, though.

I love it. This is a song I could see being played by The Imposters. This does more for me than Walk Us Uotown.
I think it has a Brutal Youth outtakes feel about it.

Playing this today gave me a different feeling. Today I think this wouldn't be out of place on the Wendy James album. It's got that knocked out in one take vibe.verbal gymnastics wrote:I love it. This is a song I could see being played by The Imposters. This does more for me than Walk Us Uotown.

(extract)
It started off innocently enough with ace Southern rock and jam band guitarist Warren Haynes seeking advice from a newfound friend. “My first thought was just to get Elvis Costello’s advice on how to approach singing ‘Funny Little Tragedy,’” says Haynes. “I felt it was different from anything Gov’t Mule had ever done and I wanted to get a late-’70s or early-’80s garage band sound, something that was era-specific.”
Costello responded by sending Haynes a detailed email explaining how he recorded several of his classic tracks. He also suggested Haynes get a Shure SM58 to capture the essence of what he was looking for. Haynes took that advice, but ultimately got more than just a simple microphone suggestion. Along the way, the seeds for Shout!, Gov’t Mule’s first studio recording in four years, and the band’s debut release on Blue Note Records, were planted.
“After the fact, I called Elvis to thank him,” says Haynes, “but I kept thinking, ‘Wow, it would be cool to hear him sing the tune.’” That nagging thought germinated into Shout!, a two-disc set with disc 2 featuring all 11 of the songs on disc 1 reinterpreted by an all-star cast. These guests include Costello, Ben Harper, Glenn Hughes, Grace Potter, Dave Matthews, Steve Winwood, Toots Hibbert, Dr. John, Ty Taylor, and Myles Kennedy.

Re: Elvis on the new Gov´t Mule record!
Interview with Warren Haynes includes:
What sort of recording tips did Elvis Costello give you to sound like vintage Elvis for "Funny Little Tragedy"?
He said, "You should use something really cheap, like a hundred-dollar microphone." [Laughs]
It's interesting you say that you thought of him when you wrote that song because the pairing of the words "funny" and "tragedy" just seems to scream "Elvis Costello!"
Yeah, there's an obvious sarcasm that's steeped in that kind of writing. And I'm a big fan of his work and have been for decades. I met him when we were playing festivals together in Australia. We just kind of became casual friends. We had a lot more common interests than we realized and a lot more mutual friends than we realized.
What interests do you share with Elvis Costello?
Well, there's a lot of things that people probably don't know about him that we share. He was a big Grateful Dead fan. And he saw the Grateful Dead, I think, in '72, when they toured Europe. And I think musically, both of us have much more diverse taste than people might expect. I'm not sure someone would expect him to be as big a fan of jazz and blues and music like the Grateful Dead as he is, and maybe people wouldn't expect me to be as big of a fan of people like him and Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones that I am.
How did "Scared to Live" evolve into a reggae song, and when did you reach out to Toots Hibbert?
That song was written more as a Beatles-esque, mid-tempo ballad. It was not a reggae song, but it turned into one in the studio. The little bridge at the end really reminded us of Toots and the Maytals. So at that point, we were joking around, "Oh, maybe we should get Toots to come in and sing the bridge." He had called about me playing and singing on his new record, so it was kind of an obvious connection.
Originally we wanted Toots, Elvis Costello and Dr. John to do cameos. But then that seemed like a waste. Why don't we just let them sing the whole song and make a completely alternate version of those songs? Then it was like, Well, let's just do every song. [Laughs]
