Post by Man out of Time »

"Caesars Windsor announced today that Elvis Costello and The Imposters on their Revolver Tour will be live on the Colosseum stage on Saturday April 21st at 9pm.

Over Costello’s stellar 40-year career, this Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter has created some of music’s most iconic hits including “My Aim is True,” “Everyday I Write the Book,” “Alison” and “Veronica”. Showcasing his wit, musical process and impressive industry relationships, is his acclaimed “Spectacle: Elvis Costello” which he hosts and produces.

His guests have included Lou Reed, Bono, Tony Bennett, The Police, Diana Krall, Elton John and the list goes on. For the first time in 25 years, Costello will let his set-list be chosen by “The Spectacular Spinning Songbook” – an interactive game-show wheel that features 40 song-titles, including hits, rarities and unexpected covers.

Audience members will be invited onstage to take a ‘spin’ and become a part of the show. Tickets start at $40 Canadian and go on sale at noon on Friday January 20th."

Guess I don't have to retype the set list now :-) Looks good to me.
A very enjoyable show considering it was a casino... well worth the drive. The casino must have given away a lot of tix. Seemed like 150 people in line to pick up their freebies at 2pm.
I managed to get upgraded to front row by swapping my 2 free tix for one free :-) and I ended up right beside the holding seats for the lovely Kat and the next spinner(s). Strange that they would use front row for that.
Sorry didn't tape, but I sure wish one of those shows would surface.

Looks like the end of Elvis shows for me now, but I am off to see Nick Lowe in Toronto Monday!

Cheers,

Costello dusts off surprises at Caesars Windsor

Audience invited to spin wheel of songs

Elvis Costello spun the wheel Saturday on his 35-year music career.

The British singer-songwriter stuffed as many songs as he could into the two-plus hours he was on stage at Caesars Windsor's Colosseum. The concert was sold out.

Going right back to the start and his ballad Alison, Costello and his band, The Imposters, performed many of the songs he's famous for, plus some intriguing and unexpected covers.

He opened the show with a non-stop four-spot of I Hope You're Happy Now, Heart of the City, Mystery Dance and Radio Radio.

Then he turned to the gimmick that has made his last couple of tours unusual - the Spinning Songbook, a large wheel with titles of songs, themes and albums on it. Invited audience members came up and spun it to determine the next few numbers.

Costello acted as a game show host named Napoleon Dynamite, which elicited a welcome cheer from the crowd.

In typical Costello style, most of the songs were short and to the point. There were some notable exceptions, like I Want You, from the Blood and Chocolate album. The slashing guitar solos by Costello and the echoey vocals were underpinned by Steve Nieve's luscious keyboards.

That formula also worked beautifully on Watch Your Step later in the show.

Costello is blessed, and has been fortunate throughout his career, to have backup musicians and longtime musical associates who know his music nearly as intimately as he does. Nieve and drummer Pete Thomas have been with him since the beginning, while bass player and vocalist Davey Faragher, a founding member of Cracker, has been in the band for 11 years.

While favourites like Less Than Zero, Pump It Up and Man Out of Time were crowd-pleasers, the many cover songs proved Costello is an able interpreter and student of music.

There are covers among his hits, of course: Nick Lowe's (What's So Funny About) Peace, Love and Understanding, and the Sam & Dave song, I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down.

But Saturday he dusted off some surprises. Prince's Purple Rain was well-received by the audience, but also in the mix were The Stones' Out of Time, and the touching tribute to the late Levon Helm, The Band's Tears of Rage.

Costello: On with the Show
by Stephen Macaulay

Elvis Costello & the Imposters, Caesar’s Windsor, April 21, 2012

In 1986—I think, as that was a long time ago, after all—the year that Elvis Costello and the Attractions put out Blood and Chocolate, they went out on tour in support of the record. I saw them at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor.

Costello took on the guise of Napoleon Dynamite—his character, which (obviously) preceded that of the film of that name—during the show. He allowed audience participation. There was a large roulette-style wheel set up with names of songs on it. Spin the wheel and get your tune performed.

And now Elvis Costello and the Imposters are out on tour in support of The Return of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook!!!

I have seen Costello play umpteen times. I know that as a GloNo participant I should have that number down cold. But it is a number sufficiently high that I had written here back in 2005 that I’d seen a show done so well that I probably wouldn’t see him again.

Guess what? Saturday night was better by a big factor.

Napoleon Dynamite made a return appearance.

There was the spinning wheel. There was audience participation.

There was a go-go dancer who is drop-dead gorgeous. I’d never seen a go-go dancer live before. She was so incredible, I don’t need to see another one again. Not that I’d mind. But “Dixie De La Fontaine” moved so exceedingly well, that it would be hard to imagine her being bested.

There was a hostess, “Katarina Valentina Valentine,” who brought participants to the stage.

There was a set, including a black-and-white rabbit-ear-equipped TV showing static. (Costello claimed it was tuned to Fox News.)

Yes, there was the band up there, as well—Nieve, Thomas, Faragher—and they did a spectacular job, as this was a spectacle (no, not referencing Costello’s chat show of that name).

The crowd at the venue in the Caesar’s Windsor Casino was appreciative and engaged, yet polite and reserved: They watched the show, as a show it was.

It occurs to me that when we talk about “going to see a band play” we often say, “I’m going to a concert.” But for the most part, that’s really not right. Isn’t a “concert” more along the lines of what a symphony plays? Then there is “I’m going to see a performance of __________________.” For example, when Steely Dan was out on tour and played a complete version of a given album, that was a “performance.”

And in the case of what Costello did, it was a “show,” and he gets the whole vaudevillian aspect of what that means, all the way to talking patter when doing setups between the bits.

The music. Here I go back to This Year’s Model and Trust and Imperial Bedroom and Punch the Clock and. . . .

Costello has a fulsome catalog. A rich variety of music. But in this case, it was a show of the rock and roll done slow (e.g., “Allison”) and fast (“Radio, Radio”) and all tempos in between. It was the stuff of then. And for many of us, then was better than now.

But it didn’t seem like a revival tour, a retro act. It seemed very much of the moment. It seemed like this year’s model.

But it wasn’t.

But it was damn good.

And I sure as hell hope that in 2019 I don’t write “this could be the last time.”
