"Video West" July 1982 - What on earth is this video?

Post by docinwestchester »

I got this on VHS in a trade. Apparently this show was never broadcast. Anyone know the story behind it? An interesting watch.

This is footage shot by a production company called Videowest for use by entertainment programs. Part of this footage was shown on Entertainment Tonight on 8/27/82, and parts were shown on MTV in September. They filmed Elvis onstage, probably at Berkeley or Santa Cruz, wandering around some interesting estate, and then indoors with Steve playing the brand new Shipbuilding.

Thanks for the speedy response. So there's more footage out there somewhere?

No -- I think that's pretty much all of it -- not including some chopped-up live footage that was shot at the Greek Theater in Berkeley.
(I saw the entire raw footage from Berkeley, at some point -- and I think it was just parts of maybe 3 songs or so...)

The original broadcast of the Video West segment was fairly short, by my recollection -- 10 minutes or so.
The final cut was interspersed with the live clips.
("Video West" wasn't merely a production company for use on other shows -- they had an actual show of their own for a year or 2 on an independent station in the SF area.)

And the Entertainment Tonight segment was just a fluff piece using very little of the Greek Theater and "estate" footage.
The entire segment was maybe 3 minutes, total -- mostly snippets of the interview.
It was an "Elvis Costello Repents" kind-of thing, in the wake of the Columbus incident.

OK -- my mistake.

I just watched all of the YouTube clip.
That's not the entire interview, obviously.
(In the footage that I saw, they delved into the Columbus thing -- and Elvis actually had tears welling up, at one point.)

Thanks john. Those links are from my old YT channel which sadly no longer exists. This new link is a much better copy, clearly a first generation tape from the folks at Video West.
