Elvis and Madness live clip

Elvis and Madness live clip of Tomorrow's Just Another Day:

If you haven't seen this clip already do take a look. Part of a TV feature on Madness from 1983, a rather star struck Suggs talks about their collaboration followed by EC delivering a great version of the song, guesting at a Madness concert. Fascinating viewing and rare to see footage of an EC collaboration this early. In EC's discography it comes directly between the singles of Man Out Of Time and I Wanna Be Loved.

Madness released their version of Tomorrow's Just Another Day as a single; I had the 12” where, on the flipside, EC's takes the lead vocal. Reminds me of how owning a rare release was somehow more exciting before vinyl all but disappeared. Apart perhaps from the Costello & Nieve live CD set, these things like hidden tracks, double CD reissues with demos and collectors booklets, iTunes only sessions don’t quite create that same connection with me. It's notable how Elvis struggled to do something different with the release of Momofuku, including imploring us to buy it on vinyl and wondering anyway if he has a place in the disintegrating record industry. I can relate to that, the industry I work in has changed with technology too, and not all for the better.

For connoisseurs this is also a great clip in that it’s shot very simply on 16mm film, the cameras on tripods holding shots instead of restless swooping about and fast cutting.

That's a great album.
I liked Madness before that -- they were fun, and all -- but they really took a big step forward with that release.

Q&a Madness’ Suggs: Beer ads, getting ideas from Primal Scream and the band’s own festival

(extract)

Having slowed things down, would you consider reworking more of your songs that way?

“Yeah maybe. I know it’s been done a million times with that unplugged and acoustic sort of thing, but I’ve got a feeling that it would be interesting. We once did Tomorrows Just Another Day with Elvis Costello in a sort of jazz ballad, which is very good if you ever get a chance to hear it. You get some subtleties out of those songs when you slow them down, so maybe that’s an idea. It’s something we’ve been talking about amongst the other million things we talk about on a daily basis.”
