Astonishing lack of Richard Hawley from WSS in best songs/albums!

Is it me, or does it get harder with each passing year to recall what was this year, and what was the previous one?

Top Five Albums of the Year:
1. Edwyn Collins - Home Again
2. Radiohead - In Rainbows
3. Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
4. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
5. St Vincent - Marry Me
[No reissues category, but the three volumes of Lloyd Cole at the BBC were lovely, and the 3 x Joy Division reissues with the bonus live CDs were my overall highlight of the year. and it was great to get the YMG's Colossal Youth, and entire output with the bonus, on CD.]

Top Five Songs of the Year:
1. Arcade Fire - Intervention
2. Arcade Fire - My Body Is A Cage
3. Radiohead - Reckoner
4. Rihanna - Umbrella [what a classic hit!]
5. Radiohead - House of Cards

Live Concert of the Year:
Arcade Fire - Ally Pally, two weeks back.

Band of the Year:
Arcade Fire

Solo Artist of the Year:
Lloyd Cole - for playing a brilliant solo gig in a small, intimate venue in my home town.

Songwriter of the Year:
Lloyd Cole - no new ones, but a brilliant demonstration of his genius

Movie of the Year:
Control - not perfect, but very good

TV Show of the Year:
Heston Blumenthal - In search of Perfection and The Apprentice, though we're only halfway through Matthew Collings Making of Civilisation selective art history and I suspect this will clinch it when done!

Sporting Moment of the Year:
Man Utd winning the Premiership again and beating Roma 7-1
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/520132/ma ... d_vs_roma/

Hero of the Year:
Cristiano Ronaldo

Wanker of the Year:
Steve McClaren

Sex Symbol of the Year:
Regina Spektor

Celebrity Doofus of the Year:
That one with a plastic face on I'm a Celebrity - Janice Dickinson?

Sandwich of the Year:
Today's were quite good. Why sandwich? How about Meal of the Year? Or Food Item of the Year? Or for me and BWAP: Fish Restaurant of the Year. The latter would be that fabulous Basque fish restaurant in Madrid near Plaza Sta Ana with the freshest, bestest fish I've pretty well had ever.

Drink of the Year:
I recently bought a bottle of Tanqueray and was amazed by just how good that 47.3% flavour is next to insipid stuff

Thread of the Year:
Curtisology

E C Fans Poster of the Year:
Richard, he rarely pops up, but when he does it's like my musical twin has appeared

Elvis Costello Highlight of the Year:
The praise and exposure for him as solo support for Dylan
(The lowlight: not coming anywhere near England other than to slag it off in interviews and claim he's not recording any more.)

Elvis Costello Song That Sums Up Your Year:

Go on, what are you waiting for punk ... ?
This was hard! I had to think! I had to google!

My usual caveat: this is culled from what I discovered this year, regardless of when it came out. I’m old. I can’t keep up.

Top Five Albums of the Year –
1. A Poet’s Life – Tim Armstrong. I really can’t believe how good this is sometimes. My summer soundtrack.
2. At My Age – Nick Lowe. I have this bad feeling that this is the Last One. But, damn if it ain’t a career capper.
3. Revenge! – Robbie Fulks (this is what a live album should be, or not – I always get caught away from my computer when he yells ‘smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em, motherf#@kers!’)
4. Near Truths and Hotel Rooms – Todd Snider. The reason why I’m sick about missing that show, and another fabulous live album.
5. West – Lucinda Williams. The good parts more than make up for the meh parts.
And all of these except Near Truths are 2007 releases! Go, contemporary me!

Top Five Songs of the Year –
1. Inner City Violence – Tim Armstrong. Just a masterpiece. There’s horns, there’s this groovy bass line and some girl-group background singers. Who’da thunk it?
2. Hope For Us All – Nick Lowe
3. Wrap My Head Around That – Lucinda Williams
4. Rehab – Amy Winehouse. I feel guilty when Josie sings along.
5. Radio – Rancid. This is off their Let’s Go album, which I bought myself for Christmas last year. I didn’t really get into until late this year, but this song is the source of the ‘when I got the music, I gotta place to go’ line that got stuck in my head for ABOUT a week.

Live Concert of the Year – I looked back and discovered I’d only been to two. The shame. Anyway, I’m picking the James McMurtry show at The Shed ‘cos oily slick wuz there. And I just want to say that I’m still SICK I missed Todd Snider at the same venue. Damn kids and their soccer tournaments.

Band of the Year – the Aggrolites.

Solo Artist of the Year – Tim Freakin’ Armstrong

Songwriter of the Year – Tim Freakin’ Armstrong

Movie of the Year – yikes. The only one I can remember seeing in theaters was The Simpsons, and I wish I’d waited for the dvd.

TV Show of the Year – House.

Sporting Moment of the Year – tossup between the Gold Cup come-from-behind-against-Mexico win OR a certain hot August night when RBNY beat the Gals 5-4. Even the turf behaved.

Hero of the Year – Ricardo Clark

Wanker of the Year - his “victimâ€

I had this shellfish and pasta thing in Naples in October. Unbelievable(cue EMF) - then saw Rick Stein attempt to make a version of the same thing on tv the following weekend - and then the next day had the greasiest fish and chips ever in St. Austell (tasty though).

We're allowed to do that?! Sweet...I don't think I've bought one album that came out this year...this year. I'll get around to it in about 15 years.

And a caveat of my own: This is the year I got into Elvis. But uh, I won't put him on the list cause it just isn't fair, really. The album and song list anyway.... Oh, and another: This is also the year that I got really heavily into music, so I have about 500 'Albums of the Year,' in reality. You might be seeing some stuff you all have known for years and years...

Top Five Albums of the Year –
1. East Side Story- Squeeze ~ My introduction to one of my staples, after the singles album.
2. World Without Tears- Lucinda Williams ~ Much like East Side Story, an intro to a most excellent artist. Also a first foray into country; Genre introduction too.
3. Squeezing Out Sparks- Graham Parker ~ Just love it.
4. Soviet Kitsch- Regina Spektor ~ I need to get Begin To Hope, but Regina introduction, great album, worth the price just for 'Us.'
5. The Hissing of Summer Lawns - Joni ~ I just love her, really. First Joni album, first post-creepy Elvis obsession album.
We've got the 70s, 80s, and 00s. Wow. I'm out of touch.

Top Five Songs of the Year –
1. Black Coffee in Bed, Squeeze.
2. Nutted by Reality, Nick Lowe.
3. Us, Regina Spektor.
4. Now That You're Gone, Ryan Adams.
5. The Art Teacher, Rufus Wainwright.

Live Concert of the Year – Seeing Elvis for the first time at the Mann in September. And I've only been to two, anyway. Damnit.

Band of the Year – XTC

Solo Artist of the Year – Rufus Wainwright.

Songwriter of the Year – Joni Mitchell.

Movie of the Year – I saw Pan's Labyrinth finally. Awesome. Sad as it is, I haven't seen a single movie in theaters this year.

TV Show of the Year – Scrubs.

Sporting Moment of the Year – Winning croquet in my back yard.

Hero of the Year – God, I don't know.

Wanker of the Year - Hmm, I can't think of anyone. They should be famous, right?

Sex Symbol of the Year – I'm gonna say Ryan Adams. That's one good looking hunk of man.

Celebrity Doofus of the Year – Gosh. Did that Hilton girl do something stupid again? I'll go with her.

Sandwich of the Year – Epic sandwiches at my friend's house. Toasted rye, lettuce, tomato, cheese, turkey, ham, and just a bit of mayo.

Drink of the Year – Tea. I love love love tea.

Thread of the Year – I'll say 'What are you listening to right now?' That's where I get a lot of cues of what I might like...

E C Fans Poster of the Year – Spooky girlfriend. She's so very nice to me, and will always listen to (read?) my inane babble.

Elvis Costello Highlight of the Year - Personally, concert. Otherwise, I'll agree, babies. They're so damn cute.

Elvis Costello Song That Sums Up Your Year – Sneaky Feelings.

So yes, no good for this year, but I have the conceit to think that someone might actually be interested in reading what I've been listening to this year. :)
Why don't you write about it in your blag?

Mood's allowed to do that because, as she says, she's old. You should know better! Actually, it's quite endearing seeing a teenager vote XTC as band of the year. I'm sure we'll all let you off.

It was my immense pleasure.

No secret there, Pophead: quoting two different people in one post is a big asspain, it really requires two. Pain enough to edit down down Mood's long one to pull out and separate those two quotes. I think I can be excused. Hey, I got another post sending you a pointless reply!

PS And at least I came to this thread to post what was intended, not to comment on others posters!
