The Politics of Politics: The Ride of a Lifetime

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Nice piece. Reflects the views of many non-democrats I know who will be voting for the big O. Note the leading role Ms. Palin plays in forcing Buckley's hand. Kooks indeed.

Sarah Palin's SAT scores. I shouldn't pile on, but she made me do it...

841 is idiot territory. Lousy grades to boot.

Argh. What bothers me about that whole "Obama is a Muslim" thing is not that it's wrong, but that it shouldn't matter.
Why don't you write about it in your blag?

Following on from that Buckley Obama endorsement, he has been forced to step down from The National Review...

Chris Hitchens has also endorsed Obama, which is almost enough to make me reconsider my support.

Conservative minority government elected in Canada. How's this gonna work, Blue? Another election in two years time?

And why is there a split between the Liberals and the NDP? Can't they find some way to work together? I know people like to go on and on about the lack of party choice here in the States, but these multi-party parliamentary elections seem very chaotic.

It's complicated. There actually was a time when a further-right leaning party called the Alliance party existed. It's leader? None other than our current Prime Minister Stephen Harper. But when that party, along with the Progressive Conservative party realized it couldn't get any votes, they merged and suddenly become a stronghold.

Of course, the Liberals and NDP have talked coalition government - including quite recently - but to the Liberals a lot of the NDP platforms seem like socialism.

And then of course you have the Bloc Quebecois, who run in the federal election but whose entire mandate us Quebec separatism.

The nice thing for us liberals is that under a Conservative minority, we've still got the Liberals, the NDP and the Bloc (who, regardless of where they stand politically are pretty progressive in terms of social issues) on our side to team up against them whenever serious votes happen.

But yes, it's pretty complicated/chaotic

Colin Powell endorses Obama. Not unexpected, after the rumors flying around over the last few days, but welcome nonetheless. Having said that, I lost a lot of respect for the guy over the beginnings of the Iraq war and his sham briefing at the UN. I suppose you could say he was just duped by bad intelligence, but maybe he should have seen through the lies.

Just watched the video. Very eloquent endorsement and I love how he walked outside and took a sledgehammer to that McCarthyist bitch on wheels Michelle Bachmann. I gave her opponent $50 yesterday. God I hope she loses.

Just found Powell's speech on youtube. Very inspiring. I was especially moved by his sentiments about Muslim Americans. Reminds me of the point made on The Daily Show about McCain's responding to allegations that Obama is an Arab with "No, he's a decent man"... as if the two are mutually exclusive.

Watching some of those people... you'd think it were 1928, not 2008.

Obama may be a socialist baby-killing muslim arab, but he is also a decent Christian american, and his education, organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills will be great assets in the white house.

I've wanted him to run for president ever since his first book came out, and especially after his speech at the DNC in 2004. FINALLY, something happened that I wanted to happen!! :) And my prayers and vote are with him.

I have to tell you guys that Doc and I were confronted by a number of people in Munich, by Germans as well as other people from other countries who were there visiting, and they all pleaded with us to get Obama in the White House.

I even listened to a German woman at the bus stop one day talk about how much she hated Bush. I only know a little German, so I mostly could tell by the way she kept saying, "Bush" and then spitting a little.

well it could happen. waking up this morning to a sea of blue polling results, including 3 with double digit leads in penn and 2 in ohio. cautious of the results, but not dubious polling firms, or any more dubious than most of the others anyway. i think the bradley effect may have turned into the powell effect. now the republican party is sending out "terrorist" mailings which should help even more. anyone who thinks barry is a terrorist is already voting for mccain.

I received a robo-call last week from the RNC with the "paid for by McCain-Palin" tag at the end. It told me, very matter of factly, that I should not vote for Obama, because he associates with terrorists that are killing americans. That really angered me. Can't vote for McCain now. Won't do it. But I'm not quite ready to jump on the Obama bandwagon either. My friends, I may sit this one out. Is Nader going to be on the ballot?

Yeah I don't understand McCain's strategy. It's like he keeps trying to win over the same core of solidly Republican voters over and over again. None of his tactics have any appeal for independents and conservative Dems worried about their savings going down the tube. Terrible campaign. I can only imagine what it's like inside one of their strategy sessions.
