echos myron like a siren
with endurance like the liberty bell
and he tells you of the dreamers
but he's cracked up like the road
and he'd like to lift us up, but we're a very heavy load

Hey, where was the flak I was expecting when I said the other day his voice was unlistenable? Did you all miss it, or perhaps you dismissed me as a misguided ignoramus. I loved things like Nothingsevergonnastandinmyway, and can't believe it's always so bad, buut I played YHF the other day and the overriding sense was one of 'great LP ruined by woeful voice'. It's not just that he can't sing (frequently off pitch, etc.), it's just plain ugly. Come on, shoot me down! Great guitarist and songwriter, though.

I missed it. I dunno, Otis - to me Jeff Tweedy is just another example of an unconventional voice. Add his to the likes of Reed, Dylan, Young, Cohen, and countless others. I think often the harshness of it is on purpose though, cause on tracks like "My Darling" and "Pieholden Suite" on Summerteeth it sounds beautiful, but then on stuff like some of YHF it gets a bit wacky.
He's actually gotten quite good at widening his range since quitting smoking. You should listen to "Hummingbird" from A Ghost Is Born if you haven't heard it.

I had most of Summerteeth on tape and liked it and was never struck by the voice bothering me, and then got A Ghost Is Born and the same, pretty much, but then more recently on hearing YHF, particularly the first verse of it, I thought WTF! More reappraising due, I think. See my Jim O'Rourke post for my suggestion over what would have improved YHF!

Perfect voice.
Over and over and over again
You say that we're just friends
Forget the implications
Infatuations end
Felt so easy
Why's it hard?
I can't imagine ever being apart
I'd come back to you
It'd be brand new
But I promise we're just friends
Over and over and over again
I try to make amends
For every thing that I've done wrong
My whole world just ends
You make some coffee
Hold me up
Try to talk me outta giving up
I'd come back to you
It'll be brand new
But I promise
We're just friends

I like their recent stuff and the early country rock stuff just the same.
Tweedy has a great voice and I just don't understand the detractors (it's much more mainstream and "acceptable" than either Bob Dylan or Neil Young, who I also appreciate)
Anyway...
1. I can't stand it
2. I'm the man who loves you
3. Box full of letters
4. California stars
5. The late greats
6. Shot in the arm
7. True love will find you in the end (I know it's a cover)
8. Summerteeth
9. Heavy metal drummer
10. Outta mind (outta sight)
And I can't believe I've left out Theologians, Misunderstood, I must be high, Just a kid, War on war, Jesus etc, etc etc

maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
MAYBE ALL I NEED IS A SHOT IN THE ARM!
MAYBE ALL I NEED IS A SHOT IN THE ARM!
Sometimes you have to convince yourself.

Re: Your Ten Favorite... Wilco songs
OK here goes
1. Jesus, Etc.
2. I'm Always In Love
3. Heavy Metal Drummer
4. How To Fight Loneliness
5. The Late Greats
6. Handshake Drugs
7. Shot In The Arm
8. Hate It Here
9. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
10. Theologians
I need to familiarize myself more with their early material, since this is very heavy on post-Summerteeth songs.
