To coincide with the end of the current series of 'Two Sounds: Other Voices', presenter John Kelly was online to answer viewers' questions from 12pm to 1pm on Wednesday 22 March.

( extract)

JC: I love it when you have guests live on the 'Mystery Train' and the two of you are chatting and playing music. Any chance of Elvis Costello or somebody making another appearance soon?
John: Thanks. Next time Costello is in town he'll definitely come in.

If Elvis ever does appear on this show again he better make it soon 'cos it's been cancelled.

This Irish blogster echoes a lot of my thoughts-

http://www.tuppenceworth.ie/blog/index. ... stle-blow/

I Heard That Lonesome Whistle Blow

A throwaway remark in one of Damien Mulley’s posts today went through me like a dagger. The Mystery Train is no more! It’s like a death in the family, or the loss of an old friend. Really, I’m in mourning. I listen to the show every evening as I make my dinner. I might as well just skip my evening meal altogether now that such a vital element of its preparation is no more. The suggestion that I simply switch over to Pet Sounds betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the Mystery Train demographic. We’re just getting too bloody old to care about indie music anymore. Has Tom Dunne played any Blind Willie Johnson recently? Any Bettye Swann? Any Buck Owens? Of course not. We’re soon to be a lost tribe, us Mystery Train passengers, vainly wandering up and down the dial in search of the occasional snatch of Lefty Frizell or Lightnin’ Slim (why do they all have such cool names?).

RTE callously dispose of this abandonment of their neediest listeners with a single sentence: “After 7 years, Mystery Train presenter John Kelly has decided to concentrate on other broadcasting commitmentsâ€

The last show will be on Thurs, July 13 , Kelly has just said on his show , so I guess that rules out a appearance by Elvis!

Elvis made an appearance via the 'phone on this evening's last show. Speaking from Boston he wished John well , spoke fondly of the shows they had co-presented etc.....and Radio Radio was played as a comment on RTE's axing of the show. Bono was on a little later , mentioning how good it was to hear Elvis on the show etc. Martin will post a MP3 of the exchanges later.

Later in the show Kelly told of his future radio plans. He will be presenting a afternoon show on Lyric FM , RTE's (primarily) classical station, Mon-Fri., 2.30- 4.30 , from October.

So great to see him back... his removal was a disgrace, really spoke volumes about Ana Leddy, the new controller of Radio 1. She's a bit ratings-obsessed, which is hardly a healthy attribute for someone given so much power in public service broadcasting. The station is dumbing down, and its future ain't looking good!
There's no money-back guarantee on future happiness...

John finally plays Elvis in his new show ; it only took four days ...........
I missed most of this show 'cos I was at the dentist. However it was playing in surgery as the drills whirred and the six inch needles were being shoved into my gums ( or so it seemed). The 'play again' function doesn't seem to have the show yet so we'll have to wait and see what JK said in his intro .

Cool selection isn't it ?

Kelly continues to play Elvis -

http://www.rte.ie/lyricfm/jk/1178174.html

Played on Monday January 21st...

including

I WANT TO VANISH - JUNE TABOR - SONGS OF ELVIS COSTELLO

This is the second time I've heard this on his show in the past week . He regularly plays Elvis' cover of Edith and the Kingpin and Real Emotional Girl from the Brodsky's Swingsongs album. Curiously , given Lyric's mainly classical output, he hasn't ever, I think, played anything of Steve's Welcome To The Voice. Which means he wasn't sent a copy or just doesn't like it.

Although it's regularly referred too , Elvis' appearances co-hosting shows on Irish radio from 1997 to 2002 do not seem to be recorded in any detail on the 'net. The following are the tracks featured on the various shows. In time I hope to add links to recordings of Elvis' comments around some of the tracks. A show that is not detailed here is the 2001 show that was done to mark Bob Dylan's birthday ; it's covered here -

Elvis regularly appeared on The BP Fallon Orchestra, an Irish radio show on RTE, during the '80s. An archiver of Irish music radio, http://fanningsessions.wordpress.com/ , sent out a twitter request for any tapes, since RTE didn't keep any copies. So I put together this zip file of mp3s of all the EC stuff I have, http://www.mediafire.com/?x3ajw7xjwlgx6jz , I tagged them, any more info can be found on the EC wiki page.
