Hi, Sorry I've been away but I had a rash. I was sitting here reading the Elvis Costello biography called "Complicated Shadows" and decided to upload some Elvis for y'all. Now this is stuff you never saw but if you are a fan of early Elvis you are gonna dig it! My new friend TC2112 sent these raw outtake tapes of the TV show 20 20 to me and my husband and I edited them down to just the highlights.
What you'll see is Boston and Detroit 1978 and some backstage chatter. Also see Geraldo Rivera, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe and the Attractions in a American Supermarket buying beer, avocados and olives. Real neat stuff!

Why does it seem that some element of this is officially released somewhere? I know I've read of the 20/20 footage, Geraldo, etc at some point.

Nah -- no segments officially released of which I'm aware.

This is culled (apparently not in entirety) from much raw footage taken for a prospective piece for ABC's 20/20, reported by Geraldo, that was to air in late '78.

It's quite remarkable stuff -- in the context of the dearth of filmed material from this period. The concert footage is a little tough to navigate, in that there is multiple angle footage from the same song performances, presented in separate segments, i.e., "camera A's" footage is shown , and then subsequently "camera B's" footage is shown, often of the same performances -- etc.

But, nonetheless, largely remarkable stuff -- EC looking VERY cool with his long hair, and svelte frame.
The offstage footage is priceless.

Again, apparently this is edited to an extent, from the previously circulated copies (as indicated in the torrent's description). But jump on this if you don't have it. (Can't vouch for the quality...)

This stuff is a snapshot of this "golden era" that pretty much stands alone in its documentation of a grossly uncovered period, video-wise...

Unfortunately this dvd torrent was not authored properly so it has been banned. Hopefully the uploader or one of the 259 snatchers will upload a fixed version. I managed to get a copy and it plays, barely, on windows media player. The live stuff is fine, the Rockpalast show from the same year is a better record. The great stuff is the backstage sequence, the getting on the bus sequence and the grocery story sequence. The latter is a real gem. While the rest of the lads load up on drink, Elvis gets avacados, juice and ground peppers. Geraldo sneers his way around the place, those jeans really look painful. Great, great stuff, a real timepiece.

Yeah, Geraldo comes off as the phoney that he is -- if you listen closely to his conversation with EC on the bus, it just rings hollow.

I love the Rockpalast show, but it has an uncomfortableness about it because of the broadcast component.

What I like about the 20/20 concert footage is it's more indicative of the climate and mood of a typical EC & A's show of the time...

I've kept away from NTSC downloads, but I guess that would just mean a potential problem with the telly (though probably most recent European DVD players of any quality can handle NTSC), not on the computer, which is where I would watch it anyway. Is that right?

The weird thing about this, in the US at least, is that the cheaper noname DVD players are usually region free instead of the more expensive brand names we know.

I got a NTSC/PAL player for under $40.

Haven't downloaded it, but it sounds a bit ropy to me. Much more interesting is this feedback comment
Hi Dave & thanks for this. Are these songs complete? Coincidentally I am working on editing a DVD of the 20/20 material. I obtained the NTSC tapes containing approx two & a half hours of footage from a friend who's had them many years. There's quite a bit of duplication but some different camera angles of some songs of the Boston show. The footage was all over the place and I am almost finished getting it into some semblance of order and ready to chapter & menu it. I've had it put through image enhancers to reduce the colour saturation and tidy it up. Is it worth me putting this up on Dime as an upgrade do you reckon.?
I'll keep you all posted.

As the uploader of this I'd say the Boston recording is better than the Columbus recording from last week, but as always you pays your money (or obviously not in this case) and you takes your choice. :o

Here we go

http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-deta ... ?id=151325
Elvis Costello & the Attractions
20/20 Show Raw, Unused Footage DVD

Once I had got the original NTSC tapes (Courtesy of a good friend 'nicmac' -
the lazy sod who has had them since the early 80's) digitised via an image
enhancing device to take the colour saturation that was present down to a
reasonable level it took me f***ing ages to go through and sort out. The
original NTSC tapes had approx two & a half hours of footage on them, some
of it duplicated and some other stuff not featuring the EC or the band
(i.e. the tour bus being filmed as it makes it way through the city) I had
to firstly identify which gigs the various sections of footage were from,
then sift through to cut out the duplicate footage and finally get it into
the correct running order and then chapter & menu the thing. So what you
get is approx 65mins of concert footage and 30 mins of extras.
Please see info file for full run down of content.
But footage is from Detroit, Royal Oak Theatre 22 APril 78(Early & Late Shows) &
Boston, Orpheum Theatre, 4 May 1978.

I had to cut the audio on the footage inside the tour bus as it was the officially
released Rutles album they were playing. The music made any conversation inaudible
anyway, so you aren't missing any of EC's gems of wit.

It will take some time to download this for you but I think it will be worth it.
It is an upgrade of the Costello1978 torrent that it here on DIME which was
approx 50 mins long. It was that torrent that inspired me to hassle my friend
with the longer version and get it up here, so thank you to Jimbean & the subsequent
uploader.

I have this on video and the quality of my VHS Pal cassette was pretty poor. I hope you have a better copy to work from than mine.

I'm putting this on YouTube now. Very confusing, but this thread was helpful.
