Lowe profile

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Did anyone get this? Any good? Barely heard of anyone here, Ian Gomm was in the Brinsleys...the rest seem to be off the radar.
The Brilliant Mistakes - name sounds familiar.

I've heard bits of a few tracks, some are good, some are bad, usual for a tribute album. Why do they make these? Nevertheless as a devoted Lowe fan I have ordered it and am anxiously/queasily awaiting its arrival.

I do know that Tiffany Anastasia Lowe is Nick's stepdaughter (Carlene Carter's daughter); I'm not impressed with her voice though (these genes have to run out sometime).

I have a lot of Greg Trooper's stuff, he's an excellent country.alt guy from Nashville.

Walter Clevenger & the Dairy Kings (Clevenger produced this Lowe LP) have a fun kind of bar band sound, the old Brinsley Schwarz vibe.

Don Dixon is a country songwriter/producer, I think; he wrote this song he sings here, which Nick covered on "The Impossible Bird."

Dave Alvin is one of Nick's label-mates at Yeproc Records.

Dave Alvin is fantastic - Blasters and a bunch of great solo stuff. Steve Wynn was leader of the Dream Syndicate - This looks like fun.

There's another tribute to Nick Lowe that came out a while ago on Telarc and I think most of it is great -

Labour of Love - The Music of Nick Lowe

1. All Men Are Liars: Dar Williams
2. The Rose of England: Graham Parker
3. Cracking Up: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
4. Half a Boy and Half a Man: Sleepy LaBeef & C.J. Chenier
5. Where's My Everything?: Greg Brown
6. Television: Marshall Crenshaw
7. Shting Shtang: Joe Clay
8. When I Write Book: Andrea Re
9. Cruel to be Kind: Marshall Crenshaw & Christine Ohlman
10. Faithless Lover: Charlie Musselwhite
11. Soulful Wind: Guy Davis & Levon Helm
12. (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding: Joe Louis Walker
13. Egypt: Elvis Costello
Everyone just needs to fuckin’ relax. Smoke more weed, the world is ending.

This is an excellent compilation (the new one that is, must load up the other one on my mp3 player). Whenever a track pops up it always sounds great. Dare I say it, some of these versions are better than Bashers. That contrived ironic poppy sound on some of Nicks albums, particularly his 80s ones, makes them rather dated sounding.

Yeah, Labour of Love had some good tracks -- the two by Marshall Crenshaw were fine, so was Andrea Re's When I Write the Book. Charlie Musselwhite on Faithless Lover maybe outdid Nick's version. And Elvis did a superb job with Egypt, of course.

But why did they let Dar Willams sing "All Men Are Liars"? The whole thing that makes that song funny is when a man sings it -- otherwise it's just a woman whingeing about men, which is nothing new.
