R.I.P Wesley Willis

Wesley Willis, one of the most prolific and fascinating artists of the past fifteen years, passed away from leukemia over the weekend. He recorded over a thousand songs that he had written, many in tribute to his musical heroes, people he knew or odes to somebody laying a man-sized ass whomping on somebody else. I was introduced to his music through a friend who was a tremendous fan and who had the privilege of headbutting Mr. Willis at a concert once. To say that Wesley Willis overcame a series of crushing obstacles put in front of him to achieve cult notoriety as a unique musical artist is kinda like saying The Beatles had a good run in their day. If there is a heaven, I hope Wesley is finally getting the rewards he deserved.

Very sorry to hear it.

As it happens, I wrote a review of a documentary about Willis a while ago. While it's tone is a bit jaundiced, I really do admire what he was able to accomplish and find his work intriguing.
