Life's companion (Crooked line???)
Thanks - just finished downloading the most recent Wallingford 22-07 BT for just this one song!!!
If anyone can work out some way of sharing quickly e.g. .mp3 of new '1st timers' Costello performances such as martinfoyle's generous sharings, I/others am sure would be grateful, as not aeveryone is convinced that full .WAV file is only way to enjoy sounds/new performances.
Currently I seek e.g. 17-07 Atlanta 'The angel of death' - 30-07 Columbus 'Ain't living long like ...'

Recent '1st timers' ...
Currently the other recent '1st timers' as .mp3s are sometimes available via Soulseek or WinMX, where e.g. I when online 'share' them.

I've had a go at transcribing the lyric to this . The second verse seems a bit unclear - can anyone hear it any clearer?
Life isn't a game
Won or tied
Lost by either side
The same peoples idea
Of straight and narrow
Get revealed to me
Chorus
If you were my lifes companion
As it seems you may turn out
To be contemplating
Now I know you'll find me waiting
At the very end of this crooked life
Love isn't a trial
Of strength and weakness
To light up the darkness
While some people in bars
Go worthwhile spar
Even started withour the fight
Chorus X 2
Life isn't a game
Won or tied
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As Elvis has been introducing it , this is a song he wrote with T Bone Burnett for a film , but the movie makers were 'too cheap' to use it. A story back in April '05 said this -
'Beyond "Walk the Line," Burnett has created music for two other forthcoming features. He scored and wrote three songs for Wim Wenders' "Don't Come Knockin'," the Sony Pictures Classics release screening at Cannes next month. He has collaborated again with Costello on "Sulfur to Sugar Cane," a song to be sung by Sean Penn in Steve Zaillian's remake of "All the King's Men," due in December from Columbia. '
As you can see there doesn't seem to a mention of sugar or sulphur so this would appear to be a different song. What with out-of-contract Elvis not seeming to be planning a rock album in the near future I reckon ' Lifes companion' will probably premiere on T Bone's forthcoming album.
Interestingly , Elvis also says, in Wallingford , that this is a song 'about some people who's songs we've been singing tonight' . Who could that be ? The Stanley Bros? Gram Parsons?

Great start, but
> Life isn't a game
> Won or tied
> Lost by either side
Good so far.
> The same peoples idea
> Of straight and narrow
> Get revealed to me
Actually . . .
Then, some people's idea
Of the straight and narrow
Never appealed to me
> Chorus
> If you were my lifes companion
> As it seems you may turn out
> To be contemplating
> Now I know you'll find me waiting
> At the very end of this crooked life
>
> Love isn't a trial
> Of strength and weakness
Good, but...
> To light up the darkness
> While some people in bars
> Go worthwhile spark
> Even started without the fight
To light or till darkness
While some people embark
No worthwhile spark
ever started without that fire
> Chorus X 2
>
> Life isn't a game
> Won or tied
Also, at various points, he says "I'm contemplating."
I think we're pretty close.
Best,
Jim

I think it's crooked LINE, not life, isn't it?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the set list I got from the Dayton show, this song is shown as "At
End of the Crooked Line."

My wild guess is that Jim is right and this song is about Johnny &
June, in
which case it was probably written (and rejected) for the closing
titles
of 'I Walk The Line'. Of course, I've been wrong before...

After listening again to the Wallingford recording and looking at the corrections I reckon this is the lyric to this song
Crooked Line
Life isn't a game
Won or tied
Lost by either side
Then, some people's idea
Of the straight and narrow
Didn't appeal to me
Chorus
If you were my lifes companion
As it seems you may turn out
To be contemplating
Now I know you'll find me waiting
At the very end of this crooked line
Love isn't a trial
Of strength and weakness
To light or till darkness
While some people embark
No worthwhile spark
Ever started without that fire
Chorus X 2
First verse to fade
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for who it's about - Mark is probably right as regards Johnny Cash and co. ( 'walk the line' , 'crooked line' - geddit?) , the song probably commenting on Johnny and June Cash' relationship.
Therefore the movie it was was probably written for was Walk the Line , the forthcoming Johnny Cash biopic.
