No more pleading ignorance!

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

No more pleading ignorance!

Post by Otis Westinghouse »

Don't know if it's been aired here before, but a cool site if you want to know who has ever recorded any song ever is allmusic.com

You can search by song, and up pops an exhaustive list. Can also be handy if you half remember a title, etc. and it tells you the composer.

And if you sign up you can often hear brief snippets.

Never again will you hear me say 'So who wrote/recorded [Dark End of the Street etc. etc.]?'

Funny you should say that. because I have 104 versions of Dark End of The Street. Allmusic.com lists 108, but only 53 of them are UNIQUE, and omits versions by Prince Buster, The Werewolves of London, Viggo Mortenson (I kid thee not), Alex Chilton & Teenage Fanclub, Robin Coffinshaker, Robert Wyatt & Barbara Dickson and many others.

Blimey, do you really have 104 versions? So it's far from exhaustive. Oh well. I concluded that from its inclusion of the TDM bonus disc it was going to be. It's still useful though, admit it!

I really like allmusic, it's just that your choice of song was a coincidence. Last week I found somebody on the internet who had 104 versions of the song - I just downloaded the entire folder.

There's some strange folk out there...

Saying that, I must have hundreds of versions of Alison, Pump It Up etc. At tmes I think it's great to have all these live shows and at other times I just think "Why have I got all these versions yet I don't listen to them so much anymore?". And then I'll see that he only played one particular song on that tour and it was at that show. Then I'll think, "Well so what?" and then my head will hurt and I have to go for a beer. And somehow all those thoughts disappear.
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?

For reasons I'll not get into, this is strangely ironic. But I'll say this, there are a lot of errors on that site. Still, it's a good resource that can only get better w/time.

If I ever want to double or triple check something, I go to a lyrics website (Lyrics.com & the like), Barnes & Noble or Borders.com. :)

I'm listening to Frank Black's version of DEOTS right now. Sweet and mellow.

I once dated a Portuguese/Japanese girl who was singing in a cabaret, Her song was a few bars of "On The Street Where You Live". She used to rehearse the song when she visited my apartment (her English wasn't very good, so it was difficult for her).

Thinking I was helping her out, I downloaded a few different versions, 22 in all, and put them on a CD. It completely spooked her.

I also have many, many versions of the songs "Compared To What" and the Tony Bennett song "Girl Talk". It's amazing what one will do when one is pissed...

GIRL TALK

They like to chat about the dresses they will wear tonight
they chew the fat about their tresses and the neighbours' fight
inconsequential things, men don't really care to know
become essential things that women find so apropos

But that's a dame,
they're all the same
it's just a game
they call it Girl talk, girl talk

They all meow about the ups and downs of all their friends
the who, the how, the why, they dish the dirt, it never ends
the weaker sex, the speaker sex we mortal males behold
but though we joke, we wouldn't trade you for a sack of gold

So baby stay and gab away,
but hear me say that after
Girl talk, talk to me

It's all been planned,
so take my hand;
please understand
The sweetest girl talk talks of me.

Sorry, man, I didn't mean to be. I'm just good pals with the originator's lovely sister - who, incidentally, looks a cross between Audrey Hepburn and a Warhol Factory model.
