What´s the best british record from the 90´s?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Of that list, I'd pick OK Computer, with The Bends oh so close behind.

Some of my other favorites (besides the Blur and Pulp records you already mentioned) would be:

The Sundays, Reading Writing and Arithmetic
The Stairs, Mexican R&B
Seal, debut
The La's
Teenage Fanclub, Bandwagonesque (might be my overall favorite from the 90s)
Stone Roses, debut (name escapes me at the moment)
David Bowie, Outside
David Bowie, Earthling
David Bowie, Black Tie, White Noise
Brutal Youth
All This Useless Beauty

That's a good one. Add it to my list.

U2 are Irish, not British. Be careful with that...

Stone Roses debut is without a doubt a masterpiece. but its not a 90´s record. (it was released in 89).

Rest assured, a Canadian is not responsible for the best album of the 90's :D

Yes. And I quote here, bambi, not to annoy you, but because Different Class is so indisputably a better record than This Is Hardcore that I just think Bob & Charlotte said it best. So why am I posting? Good question...

D'oh! I first heard it in 1990. I guess it took a while to get to Abilene, TX.

Soup Dragons - the one with I'm Free. Loved that record.

I'd throw in a vote for BANDWAGONESQUE as a great record. Not best of the decade though. Gott a think about that one. Plus, they are Scottish, no?-- gotta be careful with that, too!! Especially in the '90s!

She's right, you know. Great Britian: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland. Perfectly correct to use the term "British" for all of the above, evn though some folks may wish things were otherwise. (The Union Jack, after all includes St. George's, St. Andrew's, and St. Patrick's crosses. Wales got left out  ).

So Teenage Fanclub is in.

Yeah but ask a Scottish person if they'd like to be characterised as 'British.' Anyway, it's B&C's question, and therefore she (?) can define it.

A Scottish student of mine insists on it.

Bands that are not british.....U2...that's it.

Great Britain = England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

I am Scottish and British. Ok, depending on your outlook/religion/politics, some people in Scotland, Wales and Norn Ireland will claim that they're not british....but they technically are. I don't see why the idea of the UK is so hard to grasp...it's a little like saying Im Texan and American, expcept british countries have a greayer sense of identity (hey, maybe Texas wasn't a good example to use there then! ).

Noise..Wales got left out of the Union Jack because it has always been pretty close to England, as much as many patriotic welshmen will deny it...they were part of proto-britain when the UJ was made in the 17th century.

Most people would probably say Oasis' What's the story morning glory in terms of popularity and influence.

I would have to say The Bends though, if we're only talking 90s bands...also

Pulp's Different Class
The Manic Street Preacher's The Holy Bible
The Stone Roses's The Stone Roses
Travis' The Man Who,
The Verve's Urban Hymns,
Blur's 13,
Coldplay's Parachutes
Ocean Colour Scene's Moseley Shoals

She's right (Scotland and Wales), but you're not, nor Crow. The correct definition is GB = the first three, it's only the political entity of 'the United Kingdom of GB and Northern Ireland' that includes the latter. Of course many Northern Irish people, sad to say, regard themselves as 'British', but that's the legacy of fucked-up history for you.

In mainland Europe (and no doubt elsewhere), it's a common misconception to think that English = British, which is like saying Catalans are Castillians, etc.

I'd go for The Bends, myself.

Withdrawn. You're quite right, and I should know better. That's exactly what I teach my students, so at least I got it right when it counts. All the sneering Orangemen in the world don't make Northern Ireland British, even in title. Remind me not to shoot my mouth off in Ulster--might start another Rising.

I know that there's a lot of anti-McCartney sentiment on this board, but I think Flaming Pie is easily among the best albums of the 90's.
