Well I went to church today to pray that a recording of this show would pop up. Any shot at my prayers being answered?

Before Nick Lowe's set at HSB (with an entirely different band than Friday) I spied Derek Huston who played sax for Friday night's shows. He could not have been nicer. I complimented him on the lounge version of Accidents Will Happen they performed before the second part of Friday's show. He said he had thrown out that title while they were trying to think of an instrumental, and didn't hear anything more about it until the proposed set list came out for rehearsals. Imagine his surprise when the title appeared with his name next to it, particularly because he had no charts or arrangement. He based it on the Live at Hollywood High version, which he said fit the baritone sax quite nicely. He was also very happy to borrow Ruth Davies' charts, because she seemed to be the only person to have any.

Yes they played an extra song the second show. They were afraid they wouldn't be able to get the crowd out from the first show in time if they included You Got the Look I Like. The song was sung by drummer Paul Revelli. He did mention that though the second show was one song longer, they played with fewer glitches in the first show.

From the listserv:

-----Original Message-----
From: Michael Hernandez

Subject: The Annotated Costello Sings Lowe/Nick Sings Elvis setlist

Broken down by album and artist, here's what I've got:

Nick
----
1972 Nervous On The Road - Brinsley Schwarz (Don't Lose Your Grip On Love)
1974 The New Favourites Of... - Brinsley Schwarz (PL&U)
1976 Heart Of The City
1977 Jesus Of Cool (I Love The Sound of Breaking Glass)
1978 Labour Of Lust (Cruel To Be Kind)
1980 Seconds Of Pleasure - Rockpile (When I Write The Book) 1990 Party Of One (What's Shakin' On The Hill, You Got The Look I Like)
1994 The Impossible Bird (Lover Don't Go)
2001 The Convincer (I'm A Mess)
2007 At My Age (I Trained Her To Love Me)

1. PL&U - duet
2. Heart Of The City - duet
3. Breaking Glass sung by Bob Andrews
4. You Got The Look I Like - second show only (d'oh!) 5. Lover Don't Go sung by Austin de Lone

Elvis
-----
1977 My Aim Is True (Alison, Mystery Dance)
1979 Armed Forces (Oliver's Army, Accidents Will Happen, PL&U)
1986 King Of America (Indoor Fireworks, Poisoned Rose)
1986 Blood & Chocolate (Home Is Anywhere...)
2004 The Delivery Man (Monkey To Man)

1. Accidents Will Happen - instrumental
2. PL&U - duet
3. Monkey To Man sung by Bill Kirchen

Dave Edmunds
------------
1977 Get It (Here Comes The Weekend)

1. duet

Lloyd Arnold (Lloyd McCollough)
-------------------------------
1956 Gonna Love My Baby

1. sung by Nick

So Nick stuck with the albums he produced, the song from KOA he already covered, and Poisoned Rose (which he did better than I've ever heard Elvis do the song). Elvis covered as much of Nick's recorded output as he could in about a dozen songs, which just points to how much he genuinely admires his mentor's career.

But for me, the hero of the night was Bill Kirchen. I'll admire a man who plays a Tele like that (even if he is from Ann Arbor). And here he is playing his most famous licks (and everybody else's):

It's an MP3, and it's only half the show (the second half), but here it is:

Very nice version of Cruel To Be Kind with a twist:

There are a few short clips from the same source, but no complete concert anywhere. If they had done this in NYC, there'd be a nice torrent on Dime by now.

Michael Hernandez posts to to COSTELLO-L

Uploaded just yesterday!

Harry Hippie/Cruel To Be Kind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92vkVLNxW0Y

Don't Lose Your Grip On Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP9BRDMhq-g

And some partial performances:

Oliver's Army http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KeNPB-EipA

Home Is Anywhere... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMO8QRsuYjI

I'm A Mess http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVXwim1bbWg

When I Write The Book http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33Gy8HVGWYE

I can't really tell if these were from the early or late shows, but if
they were from the first show then that's probably my fool head
bopping around at the bottom of the frame in Oliver's Army.

Elvis spoke at length and lovingly about Nick and the Costello Sings Lowe/Nick Sings Elvis show, and performed I'm A Mess as his "cover of a great British-penned hit as part of the Great British Songbook Library" on Simon Mayo 27 Oct:

(I know there is a separate thread for this but I don't know how to make a link to it)

Cheers for this notice

In view of other dire warnings on this site I'm wary of Mediafire these days, but no apparent harm has come to my computer downloading these files.
