Don't you find a certain sonic poetry in it? Talking of destroyed ear drums, I quite like music where my tinnitus blends successfully with the noises being created, and MMM is like tinnitus gone mad. I think seeing it 'performed', or something that took its cue from it, made me appreciate the ethos more.
Can't believe anyone would propose ATUB. The Other End of the Telescope alone is worthy of the label 'masterpiece'.
No poetry in that noise for my ears, Otis. As to ATUB, it has never done it for me. As others have noted it is mediocre at best and I have not played it with any regularity. In fact I have always thought he left the best off in Almost Ideal Eyes and My Dark Life- much more prefer the songs on the bonus disc. But that is just me.
"....there's a merry song that starts in 'I' and ends in 'You', as many famous pop songs do....'
Goodbye Cruel World isn't great but even that has some songs that I enjoy a lot like Inch by Inch and Worthless Thing.
Ditto for Secret Profane and Sugarcane with Crooked Line and Changing Partners.
Brutal Youth is one of my favourites.
When I was Cruel I like but not love.
North is not for me but I certainly wouldn't call it terrible and Still is magnificent.
Whether you call it an Elvis album or not, but surely For The Stars is the one?
Can't you see I'm trying to change this water to wine
Well, I bloody LOVE Brutal Youth and When I Was Cruel. Outstanding pieces of work, both of them. I could pick a song or two from both which don't set my world on fire, but as complete entities, I would list both amongst my favourite albums of all time, let alone favourite EC albums.
"But look at yourself
You'll see you're still so young
You haven't earned the weariness
That sounds so jaded on your tongue"
As far as EC is concerned everybody knows the man has never put out a bad album, even his B sides records: Ten bloody/Taking Liberties and Out of our idiot are masterpieces!
All This Useless Beauty, too. Maybe not his most cohesive work, overall, but there aren't many artists who could release a better album that one of EC's supposed "lesser" efforts. Love it to bits.
