Agreed, darlin'. The first time I heard that album, I was mesmerized for weeks. It's a true shame he wasn't able to give us more.Jackson Monk wrote:...the greatest debut ever has got to be

Blowin' Your Mind, TB Sheets and the other records made from the Bang sessions doesn't count IMO, because the songs were meant for possible single releases only + Van was very unhappy with the results. When Brown Eyed Girl became a hit, Bang rush released Blowin' Your Mind without consulting Van about title, cover or track list. (And then they have been repackaged about a thousand times.)
I agree about Them, though. Their first record is Van's debut, really.

What this world needs is more silly men.
By those standards you could say that Nick Lowe's Jesus Of Cool is not a debut because of the Brinsley Schwarz albums. Sure, Them wasn't much more than a band name for a solo artist, but still, as far as most are concerned, Astral Weeks is the proper debut from Van the manBob And Charlotte wrote:Astral Weeks is surely one of the greatest masterpieces in popular music, but i ain´t sure if it´s a debut album at all (let´s not forget the Them albums and i thing there´s an album called Blowin My Mind or something - but i´m not sure if its a collection or not)
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

It starts to become problematic -
What about Rockpile, Traveling Wilburys or The Highwaymen?
Husker Du, Bob Mould, Sugar?
The Wailers, Bob Marley?
Box Tops, Big Star and Alex Chilton?
Byrds, Hollies, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Crosby Stills and Nash, Crosby and Nash?
Isn't This Year's Model a great debut for Elvis Costello and the Attractions?

when i said debut album i meant to say the start of someones career... for instance, Plastico Ono Band is not John Lennon´s Debut (that would be Please Please Me) ...
know what, nevermind.... if most of you consider Astral Weeks to be the first Van Morrison album, that´s my favourite debut of all time....

Show me where the name 'the Attrractions' appears on TYM! Exactly, Armed Forces is therefore the 'debut' of EC&theA's. I rest my case m'lud.Kissy Monster wrote:Unless this is a subtle joke that I'm not getting, Boy With A Problem is right.Otis Westinghouse wrote:No, that was Armed Forces!Boy With A Problem wrote:Isn't This Year's Model a great debut for Elvis Costello and the Attractions?

Not quite 2,000, but get this: I looked up in Thomson where the name 'the Attractions' first appeared in public, and of course the useless nincompoop doesn't tell us (precisely, though it seems clear that the name was being used during the summer of '77 tour), nor does he make any reference to the fact that the cover of TYM makes no reference to them (in name!). The funny thing is, though, that the original vinyl labels did say 'and The Attractions'. What about early singles? When did the name first appear there?

All of this reminds me of a story. It is metaphysical in form.
A traveler arrived just one minute late to meet his train, and sat disconsolately at the station prepared to wait three whole hours for the next scheduled stop. Unexpectedly a new train appeared immediately and came to a full stop before him!
The traveler boarded the train and took a seat. The ticket taker approached him and said "Sir, this train doesn't stop here!"
"I know," said the traveler, "and I'm not on it."
I've had you so many times but somehow I want more.
