Wow...that's my favorite Jam song, too! Love the wall o-acoustic guitars, the reference to the Schwartz/Dietz chestnut from "The Bandwagon" and the whole schmear. A case of great minds thinking alike....well, minds thinking a like, anyway.noiseradio wrote:It's too late, but I'd have picked "That's Entertainment"bambooneedle wrote:I don't think either of these two could easily be topped by another. They're both well recognized as being among the very best of The Jam songs.
In any case, since the whole thing seems opened, I'd offer "London Calling" for the Clash, one of the great opening tracks ever, or possibly the darkhorse "Spanish Bombs", with more acoustic guitars, political/historical lyrics (though even now I'm not sure of the significance except that the Joe and Mick didn't like Franco much and probably thought the loyalists were way cool)
For Squeeze, "Black Coffee in Bed", as great a blue-eyed soul tune as ever was writ, and it's about coffee! (I also like Julie London's recording of "Black Coffee" an awful lot, even if I do like mine with milk and sugary stuff)
For the Beatles...jeez louise, I don't know....how do you pick a favorite from a favorite...okay, you twisted my arm, "I'm Only Sleeping" -- an intelligent salute to an underrated activity with a great bass line.
