River in Reverse discussion
Another Toussaint lyric tracked down -
On Your Way Down
Mmmm...
Some dance and some sing
Since the beginning it hasn't changed yet
People fly high, begin to lose sight
You can't see very clearly when you're in flight
Well it's high time that you found
The same people you misuse on the way up
You might need 'em... on your way down
Vintage wines from the year '62
Yes you think it's the thing what pleases you
You want to be found when you cross town
You think it's an honor girl, just to have you around
Well it's high time that you found
The same dudes you misuse on the way up
You might need 'em... on your way down
You think the sunrise is set for you
But the same sunrise is setting shine for poor folks too
I don't mind you turnin' 'round
I myself have lived a life on little higher ground
Well it's high time that you found
The same people you walk on the way up
You might need 'em... on your way down (on your way down)

In the 'paper feature Elvis is , I presume , incorrect in calling this song 'On The Way Down'

The new Rolling Stone adds even more track details. 17 songs were recorded, including: "Broken Promiseland" (apparently an EC/AT original); "Greatest Love"; "Nearer To You". They cite the total number of Costello/Toussaint co-written songs at five. And No Coffee Table wrote:We must be pretty close to having a complete list of songs:
1. All These Things
2. The River In Reverse (Costello original)
3. Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?
4. Freedom For The Stallion
5. With You In Mind
6. What Do You Want The Girl To Do?
7. Ascension Day (adaptation of Tipitina with new Costello lyrics)
8. Wonder Woman
9. Tears, Tears And More Tears
10. Where Is The Love (Costello/Toussaint original)
11. On The Way Down
12 & 13. at least two more Costello/Toussaint originals

Oh, OK. I didn't know EH knew that song. Anyway, as much as I like "Foot Of Pride", the Toussaint song came first, so that would suggest that Bob was the ripper, and not the rippee. Thanks King!King Hoarse wrote: You know what they say about being nice to the right people on the way up

(from Bob's classic Foot Of Pride...he's doing it too)
There's a fuzzy PDF of this on Elvis' PR page ;The new Rolling Stone adds even more track details.

Nearer To You
I made you think
You don't understand
But remember I'm only doing
The best I can
Every little thing I do
I'm just trying to get
Closer to you
(Nearer, nearer)
I'm sorry if I seem, ooh, yeah
A little bit stubborn sometimes
I hope I'm not being
A nuisance to you
I know you said
That you'd be home soon
I got to be nearer
Nearer to you
Every little thing I do
I'm just trying to get
Closer to you
(Nearer, nearer)
Every little thing I do
I'm just trying to get
Closer to you
I got to be nearer
Nearer to you

I meant that even Dylan didn't stop writing about the subject just because Like A Rolling Stone is the definitive article, so why should it keep anyone else from giving it a go? (And besides, not knowing enough about mr Toussaint, I have no clue as to whether On Your Way Down predates Al Kooper's chance debut on organ or not.)wardo68 wrote:Oh, OK. I was referring to Like A Rolling Stone. But King's choice fits even better, though Foot of Pride came out after Toussaint's L,L & L album (in 1972). And only a few songs come to my mind when I hear "Bob Dylan's classic".noiseradio wrote:Sounds like an uninformed opinion if you ask me.Extreme Honey wrote:Sounds like a lousy rip off Bob's classic if you ask me.
Preacher was a talkin' there's a sermon he gave,
He said every man's conscience is vile and depraved,
You cannot depend on it to be your guide
When it's you who must keep it satisfied

Did I ever tell you guys that my step-uncle sang "All These Things" at my wedding? He totally owned it. The line "the thrill is so divine" was MEANT to be sung up into an old, marble, Catholic Cathedral. It was gorgeous.
He also sang "When I Fall in Love" and "Grow Old With Me".
OH, he's the one who first told me about Elvis Costello! He's a nut just like us! He has the same frames!

Loving this board since before When I Was Cruel.

I said it sounds a lot like a rip off simply because after a quick glance at the song I thought the themes were alike. I wasn't trying to put down Allen Toussaint, Bob Dylan, Noiseradio, The United States of America or democracy in the 21st century. Well possibly Migdd. but that's it.

A few more facts:
http://www.nilesstar.com/articles/2006/ ... lumn01.txt
Elvis Costello, 51, and the Imposters went to New Orleans and recorded 17 songs with pianist Allen Toussaint, 68, for the CD “The River in Reverse,” to be released in May on Verve Records.
They collaborated on Costello's 1989 album, “Spike.” This time they wrote five songs together.

Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.
