Burning FLAC files with ease...

Post by Dr. Luther »

I just installed a new Sony burner in my computer.
It came with NERO software.

What gives? I thought that FLACS had to be converted to WAVs to be burned.

This NERO thing is playing and burning FLACS as is. No problems that I've seen.
Is this a new phenomenon, or was I misinformed?

I am not that familiar with NERO. However, bear in mind that your ability to play FLAC files using NERO will not translate to playing them on a regular CD player. If you plan on listening to the files anywhere other than your computer you would still want to convert FLAC>WAV. I use FLAC Front End, which converts in both directions. You can pick that up here http://members.home.nl/w.speek/flac.htm

Hope that helps.

Sorry, should have been clearer.

This very moment I'm listening, on a stand-alone 15 year old Sony CD player, to a CD burned directly from FLAC just minutes ago.

Plays fine, reads out all info, etc.

I don't understand, but it sure is nice...

Ya got me! :D That's cool though! I'm assuming it's the EC show from Sydney you're listening to? If so, how is it?

Actually, it was Berkeley 2/7/78, as I haven't heard it on my stereo yet, only on my computer.

That was my 1st Costello show attended, so it is dear to my heart. Have always had my original cassette that I taped off of FM, but this torrent that surfaced fairly recently (taken straight from the KSAN pre-FM tapes, supposedly) sounds spectacular. What a treat...

As for this FLAC / NERO thing:

I had "Frontend" downloaded as well, and had been using that to convert to WAV.
To make sure that there wasn't some bizarre cross-pollenation glitch thing going on, I uninstalled the FLAC Frontend from my computer, and burned some FLACS directly through the NERO program, and I'll be damned if they aren't perfect dupes. (My wife just eMailed me from work saying that the Sam Phillips in-studio radio performance FLACS that I burned for her this morning sounded great in her car...!)

Maybe NERO has incorporated FLAC capabilities into their updated software, or something.

Sure makes it easy...

It does, doesn't it? Sounds like your Nero has this plugin

as part of its package, and about time too.
