Rank Painted From Memory
The first EC album I bought upon release, and essential blue christmas listening. I had huge problems picking my darlings out of the top 9, but here goes:
1. God Give Me Strength
2. Toledo
3. In The Darkest Place (amazing performance)
4. I Still Have That Other Girl
5. My Thief
6. Tears At The Birthday Party
7. This House Is Empty Now
8. The Sweetest Punch (I love Bill Frisell's arrangement and desperately want the Imposters to give this one a go)
9. Painted From Memory
10. What's Her Name Today?
11. Such Unlikely Lovers
12. The Long Division
1. God Give Me Strength
2. Toledo
3. In The Darkest Place (amazing performance)
4. I Still Have That Other Girl
5. My Thief
6. Tears At The Birthday Party
7. This House Is Empty Now
8. The Sweetest Punch (I love Bill Frisell's arrangement and desperately want the Imposters to give this one a go)
9. Painted From Memory
10. What's Her Name Today?
11. Such Unlikely Lovers
12. The Long Division
What this world needs is more silly men.

This was tough. Of the whole album, I really dislike my last two. Everything else is a thumbs' up. GGMS was a nice addition to the album, and an essential part of the cycle, but I view it as more of an encore than part of it.

this is one of my favorite EC albums, and certainly my favorite of his recent releases, so I can't just list the songs without some unnecessary asides.
Through years of repeated listenings, favorites have changed, but only one song has consistently been the one I skip over, and that is The Sweetest Punch. The lyrics are fine (as are all the lyrics in this record) but the jumpy nature of the melody and singing bothers me.
The current 9, 10 and 11 are there, and separated from the top 8 only because at different times in the past they were favorites and repeated listenings have cost them. For every one of these songs, there is a line I can find myself singing (off key, like EC) at the unlikeliest moment. This record shows why sometimes the combination of two great pop songwriters can make magic that neither, on their own, could duplicate. The only Bacharach touch I could do without are the backup ladies (come to think of it, it may not have been Burt's fault since Aphrodisiak came first).

I love this album, but
1. It takes a few listenings to get used to it; and
2. You have to be in a blue mood.
The first time I heard it, I said to myself: "Well, that's about what I expected it to sound like." I put it down and never listened again. Months later, I saw EC at Randall's Island (NYC) during the Guiness Fleadh festival. He played a bunch of songs I (thought) I wasn't familiar with, and I really, really liked them. Guess what, they were from PFM. It is now very high on my favorites list.
I Still Have That Other Girl
What's Her Name Today
God Give Me Strength
This House Is Empty Now (for some reason, this song almost brings a tear to my eye)
In The Darkest Place
Painted From Memory
Tears At The Birthday Party
Toledo
The Sweetest Punch
Such Unlikely Lovers
My Thief
The Long Division

Preacher was a talkin' there's a sermon he gave,
He said every man's conscience is vile and depraved,
You cannot depend on it to be your guide
When it's you who must keep it satisfied
