Elvis Costello, Wyclef Jean to headline Memorial Park concert event

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Elvis Costello and Wyclef Jean will headline this year’s Celebrate America concert and fireworks show, Mayor Jean Stothert announced Thursday morning.

“We had booked Elvis Costello for last year,” said Matt Kalcevich, the new director of the city’s parks department.

Canceled last year because of COVID-19 restrictions, city officials moved this year’s event, usually held around the Fourth of July, to August.

The Celebrate America event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Memorial Park. Kalcevich said they would like to return the event to a Friday night in the future.

At this year’s event, the city will also work with local access TV to provide videos of local bands, officials said. Information about how local acts can participate will be available soon on the event’s website.

The fireworks show is expected to be bigger than the previous event, two years ago, which officials said was the city’s largest such display to date. There will also be a special soundtrack.

Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

THIS IS ELVIS COSTELLO REPORTING…

The cancelation of JazzFest in New Orleans has been a big disappointment and discouragement for musicians, organizers, crew and music fans alike. We look forward to our next visit to the city in better days.

We are trying to make the best of this situation by arranging for the “Hello Again” tour to visit a few more U.S. cities during the second week of October.

Please standby for forthcoming announcements.

However, something else stands in the way of my return to the stage with The Imposters at the end of August.

I will hand you over to Steve Nieve to explain.

"There is no sign of the US border opening for French or UK citizens, so we were obliged to make a decision regarding the appearance in Kansas City (August 27th) and in Omaha (August 28th). My colleagues will be welcoming our friend, Charlie Sexton, the brilliant Texas guitarist, who plays most of the time with Bob Dylan.

I’m sure it will make for a rocking good time.

I wish I could be there to hear them but feel certain that my “letters of transit” will be in my possession before the “Hello Again” tour kicks off on the Soundstage at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee on October 13th and E.C, Pete, Davey and myself will look forward to seeing you all then.

Your friend through music, Steve Nieve”

E.C. here again.

After being off the stage since we played the Hammersmith Apollo in March 2020, it is very disappointing not to be able to smuggle Steve Nieve into the country in time to play for our friends at the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City and at the City of Omaha Celebration but we want to thank our pal, Charlie Sexton for stepping in at short notice and will look forward to these unique shows by “Elvis Costello & The Layabouts”.

Tour Dates

Elvis Costello & The Layabouts

08/27 - Uptown Theatre Kansas City, Missouri

08/28 - The City Of Omaha Celebrates America

Anyone going? I'm debating if it's worth jumping in the car early tomorrow morning from Denver and driving to Omaha. It's almost 8 hours and it looks like it might rain tomorrow evening.

The decision would be a no brainer for me in that situation - how many other opportunities would you otherwise get to see this unique line up?

The decision from my wife however…

...and, of course, there is that :D .

I'm already regreting not going (what's a little 8 hour drive, with a chance of thunderstorms :? ). That said, since I'm planning to go see EC while I'm in New England in the fall (i.e., the Providence show), I'll just have to wait. I'm sure once I see the setlist from tonight, I will immediately start flogging myself!

Elvis tweeted

“Listen My Friends” - Thanks to all who came out to hear Wyclef Jean and Me and The Layabouts. We could have danced all night but you always have to play second fiddle to fireworks when a storm is on the way. Until the next time. E.C.

Adding

Don’t get me wrong, we played the rocking, twanging, howling, crooning 75-minute set asked of us but no longer, so people didn’t miss the fireworks.

Yeah, that's a little weird. The rest of the set was all rockers and mega-hits. I guess even one was one too many...

Fun fact: EC and the Layabouts entered the stage to the music of Moby Grape and the song Omaha!
