"too many teardrops"--yep, 96 tears. plus an echo of Nixon's "four more years" which always looked to me like a Nazi salute with the thumb tucked in and the four fingers splayed.

And yet another appearance of the hangman--let him dangle, bullets for the newborn, you hung the moon, condemned man, ...and many more

A cracker. Would love to hear a band arrangement of this - it's crying out for a bit of piano, if you'll pardon the pun.

... Blimey, I missed fact EC did this whilst in the maelstrom of UK Pilton looking for 'Waiting for the End of the World/I Can Only Give You Everything'.

We are listening to your mp3 enjoyably now - thanks very much.

Lyrics are now up on EC.com here: http://www.elviscostello.com/news/for-more-tears/167

FOR MORE TEARS

Too many teardrops
And still we’re crying out loud
For more tears
You said that we’d never part
You didn’t take that to your heart

Now dark bells will chime
For our sins and our crimes
96 times
Four more tears

One hundred years have passed
A poppy pinned to your breast
For more tears
They say, “We’ll never forget”
But the earth is thirsty yet

And muffled drums will drag
As they’re folding up the flag
Zipping up the bag
For more tears

Oh, I can’t stop for trying
Oh, so come to now
And don’t delay
There’re too many tears to wipe away
Or be betrayed

Eight angry men and four furies
Surely a hangman's jury
Hung up overnight
Next morning
Read the report of the pistols sold and bought

A tale of long tale of misery
Repeats the same sorry history
Butchers cut them down to size
Spilling out their guts and lies
Soothing breezes and last sighs
For more tears

Oh, I can’t stop for trying
Oh, so come to now
And don’t delay
There’re too many tears to wipe away
Or be betrayed

i'm really interested in what the arrangement of this song might be in the future (if, of course, it appears at all). it has the same time and aura of You Hung the Moon--first world war, hangmen, thirsty earth, innocents, a tragic waste of brutal youth, poppies, false pride in the face of death, etc.

i still have a lot of trouble, quite literally, hearing these recording clearly, so i find that my judgment about the song itself is very sketchy because I can't quite hear the surrounding chords fully and therefore can't quite place the melody properly.

Also, I mentioned this in another thread, but he sounds very flat occasionally on this and on other "live" recordings, but that may be partly due to the fact that I can't get the key clearly established because of the recording quality...
