Costello followed a moody version of "On Your Way Down" with a funky, upbeat "Yes We Can."
http://home.wanadoo.nl/hvandenberk/lyri ... d01-05.htm

Yes we can
(Lee Dorsey/ Allen Toussaint)

Now is the time for all you bad, bad boys,
To get out and treat your brother like your mother.
Now is the time for all you skinny little girls,
To get out and find yourself a lover.

When it all comes down;
When it tumbles down to the ground, as it will,
You're going to need somebody like me
Just to love you.

I know we can make it; I know very well.
I know we can make it; I know very well. - I'm telling you
Yes we can can, yes we can, we can we can,
Yes we can can, we can;
Yes we can can, yes we can, we can we can,
Yes we can can, we can.
Yes we can can, we can we can,
- I know, I believe we can!
Yes we can can, we can we can;
- I know we can...

Now is the time for all you bad, bad boys,
To get out the backrider bag by now.
Now is the time for all you skinny little girls,
To get out from behind the type writer.

When it all comes down,
When it crumbles to the ground;
You're going to need somebody, just like me
To love you, love you.

I know we can make it; I know very well.
I know we can make it; I know very well. - I'm telling you
Yes we can can, yes we can, we can we can,
Yes we can can, we can;
Yes we can can, yes we can, we can we can,
Yes we can can, we can.

{guitar NOISE!}
{keyboard fun}

Now is the time for all you bad, bad boys,
To get out and treat your brother like your mother.
Now is the time for all you skinny little girls,
To get out and find yourself a real fat lover.

It will all come down;
It will crumble to the ground,
And then you're going to need
Someone like me just to love you.

I know we can make it; I know very well.
I know we can make it; yes I know very well. - I'm telling you
Yes we can can, yes we can, we can we can,
Yes we can can, we can;
Yes we can can, yes we can, we can we can,
Yes we can can, yes we can.
Yes we can can, yes we can, we can we can,
Yes we can can - I know we can!
I believe we can, yes we can
Yes we can, yes we can,
Yes we can, I believe we can...

' muffnote: The song, entitled Yes We Can, is usually credited to Allen Toussaint but in fact Lee Dorsey was the man that wrote it in 1970. '

The Hawaian shirt was cracking, kind of. You are right on the jeans, though. But I wouldn't be surprised if there was a purpose in wearing them.

From Ayako on the eclistserv

Just found this review -

http://oldies.about.com/od/oldiesmusicn ... leeasy.htm

extract:

Elvis Costello
Underrecognized as a vocalist, this post-punk songwriter was a
bit too British to lend his own work to the proceedings, but he
did acquit himself well enough with interpretations of Touissant's
"Yes We Can Can" (a big hit for the Pointer Sisters) and,
shockingly, Dave Bartholomew's "The Monkey," shouted over
the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. These styles don't necessarily fit
his voice well, but points for trying. Grade: B-

Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Dave Bartholomew, Elvis Costello
Fats Domino couldn't make it to the show, unfortunately, so his
co-writer/arranger/bandleader/producer Dave Batholomew
stepped up. With the Dirty Dozen behind him, they kicked up
quite the brass-band storm. Grade: A

... and lots of photoshere!

Stars Honor New Orleans at Katrina Benefit
Sunday September 25 11:44 AM ET

It's not often that a Nobel laureate, Pulitzer Prize winners, Grammy winners, Academy Award winners and just about every other kind of winner share a single stage. But a benefit for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, sponsored by The New Yorker as part of its annual New Yorker Festival, brought an eclectic and star-studded cast of performers to Manhattan on Saturday night. The lineup included Toni Morrison, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, Kevin Kline, Richard Ford, Willem Dafoe and lots of zydeco music.

Most of the evening's entertainment celebrated New Orleans culture.

Actress Patricia Clarkson read Tennessee Williams' letters from the French Quarter, New Yorker writer Calvin Trillin read an essay about the city's anything-goes attitude, and actor Terrence Howard read a Mark Twain essay about New Orleans architecture.

Woody Allen played the clarinet with Eddy Davis and his New Orleans Jazz Band, and Kevin Kline played Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927," a song from the mid-1970's that sounds as if it could have been written about Hurricane Katrina.

Other performers included musician David Byrne, Buckwheat Zydeco, Queen Ida and Her Zydeco Band, Audra McDonald, Mary-Louise Parker, Walter Wolfman Washington and the Roadmasters and more. New Yorker editor David Remnick said many of the performers were still searching for relatives missing since the hurricane.

Tickets for the event ranged from $50 to $250, with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross. Conde Nast Publications, publisher of The New Yorker, will match the donation.

Allen Touissant, a legendary New Orleans pianist, summed up the night: "If you'd like to know how to get from the Big Apple to the Big Easy, take Highway Love, and you'll get there."

From Bill, eclistserv

...he(EC) was great last week with the
Jazz Passengers at a downtown New Orleans benefit, arriving very late
after the bigger uptown benefit, but just in time to sing the hell out
of a "Fire Suite" from Keaton's Bar & Grill and lead the non-stationary
parts of the band in a very New Orleanian procession through the crowd.

New Orleans relief

Of all the show biz events dedicated to raising money for Hurricane Katrina relief, the one thrown by the New Yorker magazine a few weeks ago may have been the best.

Even without the fanfare of a TV network-sponsored gala, it raised $500,000. The evening featured inspired (and inspiring) performances by singers, actors and writers, all of whom focused strictly on an aspect of New Orleans.

Among the highlights, Kevin Kline sang a song by Randy Newman, no stranger to New Orleans, and Calvin Trillin read a hilarious series of letters. Best of all, Elvis Costello sang a brand-new song, which he had composed that afternoon, called "River in Reverse."

In fact, Costello, more than most entertainers, gave his time on many occasions as he tried to rouse the public about New Orleans' plight. He appeared at three consecutive benefits at one point -- and didn't seek the TV cameras, unlike many of his counterparts.

Speaking subsequently with VH-1's Bill Flanagan at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan, the singer and composer shrugged off any bouquets. "We should all do what we can," he said.

Costello noted that he felt a kinship to New Orleans because its airport was named for a musician, Louis Armstrong, just as Liverpool's honors John Lennon.

Elvis is all over the new RS with McCartney on the cover, from the benefits to Sir Paul. I just flipped thru it briefly last night and saw his name at least 4 times - I guess Jann doesn't hold grudges.

Now, where's that River in Reverse song?

Higher Ground is an edited chronicle of the jazz-heavy benefit Marsalis staged at Lincoln Center in early October. Paring down the four-hour all-star performance to 17 tracks means a final cut that is bound to leave a few fans grumbling. Frankly, cutting straight jazz sessions by Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner and an extraordinary duet between Elvis Costello and New Orleans musical ambassador Allen Toussaint (on Freedom for the Stallion) in favor of comparatively flighty performances by Bette Midler and Norah Jones is a crime.
