İSTANBUL - 1977 yılında 'My Aim Is True' albümüyle müzik hayatına başlayan ve Liverpool'un Beatles'tan bu yana çıkardığı en önemli müzik adamlarından biri Elvis Costello yarın saat 21.00'de 12. İstanbul Caz Festivali kapsamında Harbiye Açıkhava'da sahneye çıkacak. Şarkı yazarlığı konusunda Bob Dylan, Van Morrison gibi devlerle kıyaslanan Costello new wave ve punk'a bulaşarak başladığı kariyerinde rock, pop, reggae, soul ve caz gibi türleri eşsiz vokaliyle ve farklı müzik algısıyla birleştiriyor. Tuşlu çalgılarda Steve Hart ve Steve Nieve, davulda Pete Thomas ve basta Davey Faragher'den kurulu The Imposters ekibiyle İstanbul'da konser verecek Elvis Costello'nun ünlü Rolling Stone dergisine verdiği söyleşiye uzanıyoruz şimdi.
Pop müziğin neredeyse tüm türlerini, hatta operayı bile denediniz. Fazla ileriye gitmiş gibi hissetmiyor musunuz?
(Gülerek) Hayır dersem çok mu ukalaca olur? Başaramayacağım işlere girişmiyorum. Şansım da yaver gitti şimdiye kadar İngiltere'de 1970'lerin sonlarının sanatçısı olarak biliniyorum. Şarkılarımın hepsi listelere girdi. Amerika'daki ticari başarım 1982'den 1991'e kadar sürdü. Bu dönemde hit parçalar da çıkardım. Bundan uzaklaştım çünkü daha da büyümek istemedim. Ve planım işe yaradı. 'Notting Hill'in film müziği 'She' (Charles Aznavour'un şarkısının cover'ıydı), tam bir hit oldu. Bana ihtiyacım olan parayı ve dilediğim işi yapma imkânı sağladı.
Büyük firmaların desteğiyle bu tür aşırılıklar yapabiliyorsunuz. Sizin kuşağınızdan ve sizinle benzer türde müzik yapan sanatçılar aynı imkânlara sahip değil. Albüm anlaşmalarını bile zar zor yapabiliyorlar.
Onlar benim yaptığım şeyleri yapmaya çalışmıyorlar. Belki onlara çekici gelmiyor yapmaya çalıştıklarım. 'Almost Blue'yu yapabilmek için Nashville'e kadar gitmek, yapılan işe düşkün olmayı ve merak duymayı gerektirir. Bu işin kariyerim için neler getireceğini ya da benden neler götüreceğini bir an bile düşünmedim. 'Imperial Bedroom'u o büyük orkestra eşliğinde yapabilmek için Geoff Emerick'le işbirliğine gitmenin neye mal olacağını düşünmedim. 1982 yılında Kraliyet Filarmoni Orkestrası'yla Londra'daki Royal Albert Hall'da bir konser vermek üzere anlaştım. Bana, '60 kişilik orkestra için şu kadar para istiyoruz' dediler. Ben de, '80 kişilik orkestra ne kadar?' diye sordum. Ne yaptığımı bilmiyordum. Sanki pazardan havuç satın alıyor gibiydim.
İçgüdülerinizle mi hareket eden bir insansınız?
Çok içgüdüsel hareket ediyorum, ama ileriyi de görüyorum. Çok sabırlı bir insanım. Belki de kendi ölümsüzlüğümle ilgili yersiz bir inancım var. Gelip geçici akımlara, moda olan şeylere karşı yıkılmadan ayakta kalabileceğime inanıyorum. 80'ler boyunca da sabırla bekledim ve sonunda o abuk tipler aptal saç stillerini ve 'sintisayzır'larını da alıp gittiler.
Hayranlarınızın çoğu, yeni albümünüzü beğensin beğenmesin, ilk albümlerinizin daha iyi olduğunu söyleyebilir.
Hiçbir şarkıyı nostalji olsun diye söylemem. Belki de karşılaşabileceğiniz en 'nostaljik olmayan' insanım. Gelecek nesille de ilgilenmiyorum. İsmin müzik dünyasından bir kez silinmişse silinmiştir!
Arkanızda bırakacağınız mirasla da mı ilgilenmiyorsunuz?
Hayır. Bakmakla yükümlü olduğum, arkada bırakacaklarımdan para kazanması gereken bir kişi olursa ilgilenirim ancak. Şan, şöhret içinse miras umrumda olmaz. Nasıl olsa ben burada olmayacağım.
Gelecek nesille ilgilenmiyorsanız, bu albümleri kimin için yapıyorsunuz?
Özellikle de 'Il Sogno ve 'The Delivery Man' gibi farklı albümleri...
Dinleyecek olan herkes için. Ben gençken sadece rock dinlemiyordum. Bir kıza âşık olup, Supremes ve Temptations dinlediğimi hatırlıyorum mesela. Ama David Ackles'i de severdim. Olgun bir sesi vardı. Bu seste Percy Mayfield ve Kurt Weill vardı. Ben doğduğumda rock'n roll daha yeni başlamıştı. Ama benim müzikle ilgili hayallerim 1954'e dayanmıyor. 'My Aim Is True'yu yaptığım sıralarda en sevdiğim albüm Randy Newman'in ilk albümüydü.
Kendinizi bir şarkı yazarı kadar şarkıcı olarak da gördünüz mü hep?
Bir çocuk gibi söylerdim. Babam güzel şarkı söyleyebildiği için herkes benim de şarkı söylemeye yetenekli olduğumu düşünüyordu. Bir defasında bizi ziyarete gelen rahiplere şarkı söylemem için sınıftan seçilmiştim. Bir ara koroda da söyledim ama sesim çok yüksek çıkıyordu. Bu yüzden korodan çıkarıldım. Ve o korkunç müzik derslerinden ben de aldım: bir hafta keman dersi falan. Babam İspanya'ya bayılırdı. Birkaç kere İspanya'ya gitmiştik. 13 yaşındayken babam bana oradan gerçek bir İspanyol gitarı aldı. Gitara çelik teller takıp folk gitar haline getirmeye çalışmıştım. Peter Green'in 'Man of the World' isimli şarkısı onunla öğrendiğim ilk şarkıydı.
Şarkılarınızın çoğu imge ve sözcüklerle dolu, çok hızlı söylenen şarkılar. Şarkılarınıza söz yazarken nerede duracağınıza nasıl karar veriyorsunuz.
'Pump It Up'ın beş mısrasını atmıştım. Diğer şarkılarımdaysa ince bir ayar var. 'Blood and Chocolate' albümümdeki 'Tokyo Storm Warning', klostrofobiyle ilgili bir yolculuk şarkısıydı. Yazmak için farklı yollar vardır. 'Imperial Bedroom'daki şarkılardan çoğu anlamsızdır mesela. 'Beyond Belief' ve 'Man Out of Time' bir şeyleri kabataslak anlatır. Onları yazarken hayatımda belirsizlikler hâkimdi. Bunlar 'Almost Blue'da olduğu gibi anlamı değiştirilmiş ve saklanmış sözler içeriyorlar. John Lennon vurulduğu gün 'Kid About It' diye bir şarkı yazmıştım. Habere inanmak istememiştim. 'John gitti' gibi sözler içeren bir şarkı da yazmak istemedim. Şarkının çok anlamlı olması için zor algılanan sözlere sahip olması gerekirdi.
Şarkılarınızı yazmak için en uygun nasıl bir gündür?
Bu işi ne zaman yapacağınızı hiç bilemezsiniz. Not defterlerim, kayıt cihazlarım var. Eğer bir restoranda oturuyorsam telefonuna kaydederim. (Kültür Sanat)
Festivalde bugün
Seçim yapmak zor, zira Caz Festivali'nde bugün üç konser var. Müzik dünyasının sayılı alto saksofoncularından David Sanborn ve ekibi saat 21.00'de Harbiye Açıkhava Tiyatrosu'nda olacak. Gil Evans, David Bowie ve Stevie Wonder gibi isimlerle birlikte çalışan Sanborn ve ekibine sahnede akustik bas gitarın genç temsilcilerinden Christian McBride; kıdemli perküsyonist Don Alias; 80'ler ve 90'ların en meşhur eşlikçilerinden, funky tarzıyla davulcu Terri Lyne Carrington ile piyanist Gil Goldstein eşlik edecek. Festivalin bu yılki Yaşam Boyu Başarı Ödülü'ne değer görülen Muvaffak 'Maffy' Falay ve ekibi de saat 23.00'te Babylon'da Charlie Parker ve Dizzy Gillespie parçalarını seslendirecek. Salsa meraklılarının bu akşamki adresi ise Sepetçiler Kasrı olacak. Paris Salsa All Stars'ın konseri saat 22.00'de başlıyor. New Wave Brass Band'in saat 18.00'den itibaren Nişantaşı Valikonağı Caddesi'nde sokak konseri vereceğini de hatırlatalım.

Tonight's concert within the framework of the 12th International Istanbul Jazz Festival features Elvis Costello, considered to be one of the most distinctive musicians to come from Liverpool, an artist not locked into one classification or genre by public perception.
He is a legendary new wave and rock figure, fusing different styles including pop, soul, jazz and reggae and combining these with his unique vocals.
In addition to his hit album titled “Imperial Bedroom,” recorded with his band The Attractions, Costello has also had a string of solo hits including ballads such as “She” and “I Want You.” Last year, Costello released “The Delivery Man,” which is regarded as a zenith of sorts of his diverse and successful music career. Many critics consider it to be one of his most mature albums to date.
Recently, he has been writing songs for his wife Dianna Krall's albums, who has emerged as one of the great jazz singers of our day in her own right.
Costello will perform accompanied by The Imposters.

İstanbul Caz Festivali'nin Harbiye Açıkhava Tiyatrosu ayağının açılışını önceki akşam pop ve caz müziğin en çok aranılan müzisyenlerinden, 'eşlikçileri'nden biri alto saksofoncu David Sanborn'la, onun, basta Christian McBride, vurmalılarda Don Alias, davulda Terri-Lynne Carrington ile tuşlularda Gil Goldstein gibi yıldızlardan kurulu ekibi yaptı.
Caz Festivali kapsamında bu yılki ilk konserinde Harbiye Açıkhava Tiyatrosu'nun girişi o bildik tanıdık görüntüsünden biraz uzaktaydı (köfteciler, mısırcılar vs. tektük idi). Konser mekânının da tıklım tıklım olduğu söylenemez ama çalanlar da dinleyenler de hayli memnundu. Özellikle de 1990'lı yıllarda genç yaşında birçok kişinin favori basçıları arasına giren McBride ve cazın ilk kadın davulcularından Carrington'ın performansı takdire şayandı.
David Sanborn ve ekibi Harbiye Açıkhava'daki performansını yarıladığı sırada festivalin Sarayburnu'ndaki yeni mekânı Sepetçiler Kasrı'nda bir başka konser başlıyordu. İzleyiciler deniz kıyısında minderlerle sahne arasında salınıp şaraplarını yudumlarken sahnede Paris Salsa All Stars vardı. Her Latin/salsa konserinde olduğu gibi sahne önü kitlesi hazırdı. Yine de bu yılki 'dans okulu talebelerinin yıl sonu müsameresi' ortamı geçen yılları arattı.
Paris Salsa All Stars konseri devam ederken Babylon'da sahnede usta bir isim, Türkiye'den çıkmış en önemli caz müzisyenlerinden Muvaffak 'Maffy' Falay ve ekibi vardı. Maffy usta konserinde cazın başka ustalarına; kendisine cazı sevdiren Charlie Parker ve Dizzie Gillespie'ye, onların parçalarını yorumlayarak saygılarını sundu.

Seyirciyi uzun bir süre sadece şarkı aralarına dahil eden Costello, onları ilk kez sonlara doğru çaldığı 'Complicated Shadows'un tekrar kısmını söyleterek içeri aldı.

Elvis Costello dazzled fans at the Istanbul Jazz Festival Friday July 8. Singing hits of his 28-year music adventure, Costello charmed jazz lovers.
The most beautiful aspect of the Istanbul Jazz Festival is it presentation of not only jazz masters but also musicians inspired by jazz to music lovers. Istanbul swayed to Joan Baez in the summer of 2004 and last night Elvis Costello played jazz on his fans' heartstrings. The festival was original a "jazz" festival but Costello also sang his rock songs. With his energetic but melancholic voice, Costello belted out hits from as "New Wave" to "The Delivery Man". To discover Costello's musical fusion it would be enough to listen to a collection of his ten albums. He fuses sounds as he tries a different sound in each of his albums. Renowned as the most remarkable musician coming from Liverpool since The Beatles, Costello (he had composed a song with Paul McCartney as well) is also a very talented lyricist. Although he tries different sounds in his songs, he still keeps strong ties with traditional rock rhythms. Costello is a musician, could be eclectic to the musical genre of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. He never loses his signature lyrical style in his songs perhaps because his musical influences include The Beatles. Costello sand a song in tribute to his wife, the famous jazz vocalist Diana Krall.
Each concert by the famous singer's has a special atmosphere and memory. Listening to Costello and his group The Imposters was a novelty for Istanbulites.

Last friday, the 8th, was the historical day in Istanbul, Elvis Costello
was in town for the first time. His show was a sold out event but I will cover this later.
He came to the stage just in time after the audience took their seats.
He was wearing a black suit, black shirt and a red tie. He was excited
to play in a city like Istanbul. from what I understood he had spent a
nice night the day before, he might have gone to touristical places , he
might have enjoyed the bosphorus , fish and Turkish raki, possibly.
As he entered the stage he waved and immediately started the show. He
started with the songs from when I was cruel, up tempo ones. I really
cannot remember the order of the songs he played. I was slightly drunk
not from alcohol bur from the excitement I was having.
Just before the third number someone from the audience with a good
accent of English shouted at him about how he could still pay after the
attack in London the day before. Elvis was quite cool and responded
back he should shut up if he wanted to watch the show.
He went on with his early years classics, from the detectives to radio
radio, chelsea etc. I think this was a setlist he was using in most
events.
He started the ballad section with shipbuilding. He also played almost
blue( for his wife) and the magnificent so like candy. He introduced the
song as the one which he wrote with famous mersey blues man Paul
McCartney. I applauded.
Then he started the section of songs from the delivery man.
Then was the turn for the classics again. He finished the show by
playing old numbers, up tempo ones especially. He was enjoying himself,
that is for sure. pump it up,i can't stand falling down..
With I can't stand...he asked the audience to stand up, everyone was
sitting like dead fishes and then the crowd started to dance.
the reason of the lack of the cheers from the crowd was the lack of the
knowledge on Elvis' music in the crowd.
As I've said many many times, people are only interested in She and I
want you. That is all. Nobody is aware of his catalogue. No one sang the
songs. No choirs. That was embarassing for me. People got bored should I
say. Some left very early, some went to have a drink or ate something.
I felt very bad.It was astonishing.
The reason behind this was the show was a part of the Istanbul jazz
festival and because of this the sponsors got the tickets and delivered
them to the relevant people. This is how things go in all big musical
events in Turkey. This brought in irrelevant people. They were just for
there to participate to the jazz festival. I don't want to mean that
this happened because what Elvis plays was not jazz. This was related
with the lack of the public interest. On sunday it was Tori Amos in the
same venue and the interest was 180 degrees reverse.I was in Tori Amos
concert as well.
This is totally shame for Turkish people. We should have approached to
Elvis more respectful.
But Elvis did not realize what was happening because, I think, he was
quite happy to play in Istanbul.
His band was extraordinary. Stevie,Bruce and the bass player were
amazing.
Then the bis came in.He played Hurry down boomsday and then the time
came for the general masturbation of the night.Elvis gave the public a
heartfelt version of I want you. The song people were waiting for. He
really sang very sadly. As if he was crying.
The other people including myself who was there for him only really
enjoyed the show. He received a standing ovation which lasted for

The show lasted for 2 hours 20 minutes without a break. He was in

I'd be interested in the reason Elvis was invited to play a jazz festival. I wonder if the promoters heard of North and thought Elvis would come along and play that.
It seems that Elvis is playing quite a few of these but playing rock'n'roll show with The Imposters.

This area is mediterrennean, the area of over
sentivism. We are behaving from the heart first. Brain comes second. Ýf you mix
this with arabic effect over the centuries, then any sad tune with
depressive lyrics gets catchy to the listener. I remember, there was a time
when I want you was replayed over and over and over from the big
speakers on a music store located in the most crowded street of istanbul.
Turkey loves the catchy tunes. Ýf it is a sad tune they even go crazy
for it.

It was a surprise for me that he does not play so like candy often, and
he played it in Istanbul.great grat surprise for me. He might have

As a general information on the musical taste of the Turks are yes
minor
key , minor chords within a circle is the correct definition.
This comes from the mediterrenean feeling. I don't think that shabby
doll can make it here because it does not have minor chords as far as I
can remember. Club land can make it for instance.
And it correct as well that the english songs can not be comprehended
at
first listen , the lyrics are second priority. If we love the melody,
then we pay attention to the lyrics. I want you is the perfect example
of turkish musical taste. It is minor key ( isn't it?) and the chords
are in a circle, the tune is sad, very sad and then the interest turns
to lyrics and yes the lyrics are appropriate for such a sad tune, it is
more than sad. I think the I WANT YOU is kind of a scream for the
hopeless romantics and lovers which you can find thousands in the
streets istanbul:))
