I watched About Schmidt the other night and while it's certainly not a Candide re-write, I was struck by the similar stupidities of Pangloss and Schmidt. And I thought, the more things change, the more they stay the same (and that is better in French, but I can't remember all the words). Is that what Voltaire is trying to say? The Age of Enlightenment (did they know they were living in it?) must've seemed like a much better place than the Dark Ages, but was it just same shit, different day? Blind beliefs, blind adherence to those beliefs....that garden looks pretty good to me.
And that's all I have to say about that.
