Best or better song game
A new game.
Recording "artists" are chosen, then their (apparently) best song can be posted. Then the song chosen is open to challenge by further song selections deemed as good or better. If the song choice(s) seems exhausted enough for you, you chose someone else.
To start off:
The Jam - Down In The Tube Station At Midnight

The ONLY JC Mellencamp song I like is "Colored Lights", written by him, performed by the Blasters. When I played this on my peace-march radio show (a long story of a great, tragically shortlived radio career), I said the following: "My pledge to you -- this is the only John Cougar Mellencamp song I will ever play." So, I guess that makes it his best song! It really is pretty great.

Well, I'll hum a few bars. Hmm-hmm-hmm--hmm-hmm--hu-hu-humma-huh-huh-huh-huh.
It's about...well, whatever most songs that mention dancing are about. I think there's a person of the singer's opposite sex mentioned. The lyrics I remember are "When the room goes darks, they're gonna turn on the colored lights". Not exactly Cole Porter, but it works.

Reminds me of A Streetcar Named Desire, where Brando's talking about, "Don't you remember the colored lights?" and you just want to rip his clothes off right then and there to see what the colored lights are...bobster wrote:The lyrics I remember are "When the room goes darks, they're gonna turn on the colored lights". Back to The Clash, a hugely overrated singles band, imo, their finest moment has to be Bankrobber .

It's too late, but I'd have picked "That's Entertainment"bambooneedle wrote:I don't think either of these two could easily be topped by another. They're both well recognized as being among the very best of The Jam songs.

I wouldn't be fussed about informal submissions or lack of continuity but think they and it would probably enhance the thread. Brando diversions and informative answers to my questions about previously unheard songs would be welcome anytime, too. Enjoyed reading the lyrics to The Clash's Bankrobber, look forward to hearing it. I always thought of That's Entertainment as an obvious inspiration for Smells Like Teen Spirit, so that's probably been mentioned before.noiseradio wrote:It's too late, but I'd have picked "That's Entertainment"
Good to see Mr. Average back with an interesting sequence of well considered The Jam picks.
I don't feel familiar enough with Squeeze -- only have a singles compilation -- to choose a better song, but really like the Beatles-like Is That Love.
