Well, I do not have the familiarity with the Dylan catalog that you have, but if you asked me to pick my top three, I would have picked teh same top three slightly rearranged:

1. Highway 61 Revisitied
2. Blood on the Tracks
3. Blonde on Blonde

I was at a weird age for Dylan, the place where Blood on the Tracks seemed like the only thing he had done worth listening to. Then, from that epicenter, moving backwards in time to appreciate his work. I admit to being completely niave to the most of his post Blood on the Track recordings...and that represents a mountain of work that I am not exposed to.

But I love your top three.

I'm no specialist (never heard 'Bringing it all...', f'rexample), and much as I love BOB, the one for me will always be Blood On The Tracks.

Bringing it all back home is yet another work of art!
Dylan´s genius as a songwritten is never more obvious than on the acustic side of this masterpiece.

'So I forced my hands in my pockets and felt with my thumbs,
And gallantly handed her my very last piece of gum'

'The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face'

'But to live outside the law, you must be honest'

'Won't you come with me, baby? I'll take you where you wanna go.
And if it don't work out, you'll be the first to know'

'With your sheet-metal memory of Cannery Row, and your magazine-husband who one day just had to go and your gentleness now, which you just can't help but show'

Is 'Empire Burlesque' Dylan's 'Goodbye Cruel World'? Good songs, atrocious 80's production.

Agree about Desire. Hurricaine is a great song, but the rest? meh.

Actually for me "Hurricane" is the song I skip on that album the most.

A lot of the Desire songs really shine in live performance... have you guys heard Live 1975?

"Isis", in particular is really improved on. Totally transformed into this wild tune.

I agree. The Desire songs sound much better on Live 75. I love the Live 75 version of Sara. 'Romance in Durango' and 'Isis' sound good too.

Cheating a little.....

1. John Wesley Harding
2. Love & Theft
3. Live 1966
4. Blood On The Tracks
5. Live 1975
6. Highway 61 Revisited
7. Bringing It All Back Home
8. Blonde on Blonde
9. Time Out of Mind
10. Desire

Oh Mercy & Infidels would both make the list if I could substitute weaker songs that inexplicably made the final cut (Man of Peace, Neighborhood Bully, Disease of Conceit, Political World) with far, far superior ones such as Blind Willie McTell, Foot of Pride, Series of Dreams and the original Born In Time.

Post by gethappier »

My top 10 -

Blonde on blonde
Freewheelin'
Nashville Skyline
Bringing it all back home
blood on the tracks
Basement Tapes
Highway 61
ANother side of Dylan
John Wesley Harding
New Morning

My girlfriend is an Elvis Costello fanatic, and yet she's not into Dylan at all.. I just can't see how this is possible, and yet she just shrugs her shoulders at me in a 'Eh.. ! you're an idiot' type of way..

This brings up the question... Can you be a huge Elvis Costello fan, and NOT like Dylan???...

Your girlfriend sounds entirely normal and sensible. Sometimes a matter of taste is a matter of taste.

I like Dylan a lot. I respect him immensely. I've enjoyed a couple of concerts. I have 7 or 8 of his albums. But I don't LOVE Dylan in the same way I love Elvis or Frank Black.
