Furthur @ Radio City – Elvis Costello, Larry Campbell, Diana Krall and Theresa Williams
March 28, 2011
Written by: Scott Bernstein
After paying tribute to The Clash on Friday night and Owsley “Bear” Stanley on Saturday night, Furthur finished off a three-night stand at Radio City Music Hall by welcoming Elvis Costello, Larry Campbell, Diana Krall and Theresa Williams to sit in with them tonight.
Phil Lesh and Bob Weir’s latest project opened with Samson and Delilah before former Phil and Friends’ guitarist Larry Campbell of the Levon Helm Band came out for a cover of The Band’s Chest Fever. Campbell remained on hand as longtime Deadhead Elvis Costello led Furthur through Tennessee Jed, Friend of the Devil and a creative Ship of Fools > It Must’ve Been The Roses > Ship of Fools sequence. Costello joined his wife, jazz vocalist Diana Krall, and Larry in performing Ripple with Furthur to close tonight’s first set.
Set One: Samson and Delilah, Chest Fever^, Tennessee Jed^^, Friend of the Devil^^, Ship of Fools^^ > It Must’ve Been The Roses^^ > Ship of Fools^^, Cassidy, Ripple^^^
Set Two: Throwing Stones, Sunrise*, St. Stephen, What’s Become of Baby?* > The Eleven > Uncle John’s Band^, Unbroken Chain > The Wheel, Morning Dew, Sugar Magnolia
Encore: Days Between, Jam > Fever**, Attics of My Life***

* – w/ Theresa Williams
** – w/ Diana Krall, Theresa Williams, Larry Campbell and Elvis Costello
*** – w/ Elvis Costello, Larry Campbell and Theresa Williams
[via @FurthurBand]
Furthur dug deep into their repertoire during the second set for the group’s second-ever versions of the Terrapin Station LP track Sunrise and the Aoxomoxoa rarity What’s Become of Baby? both featuring Campbell’s wife and fellow former Phil and Friender Theresa Williams. Tonight’s second set also gave Lesh a chance to shine in Unbroken Chain, showcased drummer Joe Russo’s skills throughout The Eleven and even featured a joyous fiddle solo by Campbell during Uncle John’s Band.
For the triple encore, the band started off by themselves for Days Between and then brought Krall back out on piano for a brief jam with Phil that led into a take on the R&B standard Fever that also featured Costello, Williams and Campbell. Furthur finished out the show and the run with a tender Attics of My Life along with Elvis, Larry and Theresa. Next up for Furthur is a performance at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton, NY on Tuesday.

Busy weekend.
According to twitter, they were also at a Charlie Haden show on Friday @ Birdland; apparently DK sat in with the band.

Be careful with the dates here. According to http://www.furthur.net/tour?task=alist futhur played three nights in a row at radio city hall. The setlist mentioned here does not match the date 26th. Maybe EC appeared on the 27th?

EC appeared last night - March 27. The previous 2 NYC shows are on Dime (Furthur, like the Dead, has a taper's section), so I'm sure this last show will surface soon.

Elvis Costello, Larry Campbell and Diana Krall Join Furthur at Radio City
Elvis Costello, former Phil & Friends multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell, Canadian jazz singer Diana Krall and former Phil & Friends singer Teresa Williams all sat in with Furthur last night at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. Furthur opened the show with the Grateful Dead’s usual Sunday song, the traditional “Samson and Delilah” and then brought out Campbell—who currently performs with Band drummer Levon Helm—for a cover of The Band’s “Chest Fever.” Elvis Costello—who has performed separately with Campbell and members of the Grateful Dead—then emerged for a Dead song Helm recently recorded, “Tennessee Jed.” Both Campbell and Costello remained onstage for “Friend of the Devil”—a song Costello plays during his solo sets—as well as “Ship of Fools,” “It Must Have Been the Roses” and “Ripple.” The latter song also featured noted jazz singer Diana Krall on vocals.
Furthur’s second set opened with a guest-free take on “Throwing Stones.” Later in the set, Teresa Williams took the stage to sing on Donna Jean Godchaux’s “Sunrise” and “What’s Become of the Baby.” Campbell sang with Furthur on both songs at the Furthur Festival last May. Campbell also returned to the stage for a run through “Uncle John’s Band.”
All of the evening’s guests returned one final time during the band’s encore. After “Days Between,” Campbell, Costello and Krall all took the stage for Furthur’s first version of “Fever.” Williams then joined in as the evening’s entire cast closed the night with “Attics of My Life.”
Furthur will perform in Binghamton, NY tomorrow. Last night’s complete setlist can be found in our Box Scores section.

Hey Elvis fans...
Anyone else just happen to be at the Furthur show last night?
I'm a Dead fan...but not a big Furthur fan for reasons mentioned below.
But I decided to give them another chance last night. Wow...good move!
I couldn't believe my eyes (and ears!) when Elvis came out for the third
song of the night. He sounded incredible and was clearly having lots of fun.
From the setlist --
Tennessee Jed (w/Larry Campbell & Elvis Costello)
Friend of The Devil (w/Larry Campbell & Elvis Costello)
Ship of Fools > (w/Larry Campbell & Elvis Costello)
It Must Have Been The Roses > (w/Larry Campbell & Elvis Costello)
Ship of Fools > (w/Larry Campbell & Elvis Costello)
That's the segment to seek out, particularly the Ship>Roses>Ship segment.
Also, the encore Fever (with Diana) was sloppy but lots of fun. The third encore
'Attics of my Life' was stunning.
Anyway...Here's my review from a 'Furthur' related discussion board.
*Warning* may contain Grateful Dead content.
Wow...what an amazing, surprising night of music at Radio City on Sunday. I've pretty much
checked out with this band as I have certain personnel issues, but boy am I glad that I went
last night! Here are some observations. These are just some scattered opinions. Many of
yours will be different...
Being a huge Elvis Costello fan, this was a dream come true evening for me.
One of my favorite singers on the planet, singing some of my favorite songs on
the planet with some of my favorite musicians. A colliding of beautiful worlds!
Ok...Joe Russo is a freaking MONSTER. Speaking of personal favorites...
this guy has played in groups with musicians from three of my favorite bands.
(GD, Phish, Disco Biscuits) He's the Warren Haynes of the drums. A whore and strumpet!
And man...he OWNS this band. Russo puts an avant-jazz-punk spin on this music.
I've never heard someone be so disrespectful (I mean that in a good way) to these tunes. (Maybe Ryan Adams?)
He's so aggressive, so different. He's constantly creating. He's got a Keith Moon thing
at times with his very fast tom cracks. Of course Bob & Phil wanna play with this guy.
What a kick in the ass! (Joe Russo = A+)
The Ship>Roses>Ship segment was absolutely stunning. There's a solo
acoustic version of Elvis doing this that's been going around for years.
Last night was even better than that one. His voice was HUGE on the
Roses chorus. Goosebumps! And as has been said...the segue back
into Ship was gorgeous. Also, Costello's acoustic guitar was very
present in the mix and sounded fantastic. This guy's a fan. He knows
the tunes. He was thrilled to be on stage singing these songs.
Cassidy was a bit of a let down after this. I didn't feel like
the jam built any momentum. Ripple with Diana Krall was very nice...
especially when her husband sang the choruses. Definitely the highlight
for me from this set was the Jed through Ship segment. The place was electrified!
Sunrise...Sunrise! Wow. What a beautiful surprise. Theresa Williams
sounded stunning. I was reminded of what a beautiful song that really is.
The band sounded great. Really nice.
The Stephen had tremendous energy with Russo powering the whole thing.
What's become of the baby was a long, psychedelic freakout with Lesh and
Theresa Williams trading crazy vocals. I loved it.
I'm gonna say the highlight of the 2nd set was Unbroken Chain. Russo
pounded the heck out of it. There were some legitimately nice jam segments.
And for once...on the outro jam...John K. dropped the Garcia mannerisms.
You see what I'm coming to here? I know there's lots of opinions on this
and I'll keep it short and sweet. Having a guy in the guitar slot that apes
Garcia's tone, phrasing, etc...is just plain weird. We've all got those
recordings if we want to hear that...or we could go see DSO play.
God bless 'em all...but, I'll never understand that decision.
I've always loved Days Between. I never thought the Dead really figured out how to pull it off.
I think this band's version sounds fantastic. The choruses really build up and get intense.
Russo pounds away. Bobby yells like a crazy person. Beautiful...
The Fever was very cool with Diana, Bobby and then Elvis taking verses.
The Attics sounded beautiful. You've got to hear this...beautiful!
Huge harmonies. What a way to end the show...
So that's it...Opinions, opinions, opinions. I will not soon forget this show.
It really was something special.

Totally agree. The download is fantastic! EC's voice is in top form - this was a good warmup for April Fools Day.toddamo wrote:

Phil Lesh, of the Grateful Dead and Furthur, posted the following on the Furthur message board :
kilowatt wrote:
Here’s the story, for anyone who’s interested, of how the guest night came about. We had already invited Larry and Teresa to join us on Sunday, so it seemed almost predestined when I ran into Elvis Costello, whom I’d actually never met, at our gym in New York last Thursday. We literally bumped into one another in the locker room, got to talking, introduced each other’s wives, etc. Now, I’m one to seize the moment, ‘cause I knew EC had done GD material in the past, so I extended the invite, and we were off and running. The icing on the cake, though, was going on Saturday night to hear Diana sing with Charlie Haden’s Quartet West at Birdland.
Wow. What a weekend.

From his website:
"My dog he turned to me and he said..."
Elvis Costello Joins Furthur for Band’s Final New York Blowout.
He fronts the band on classics like 'Tennessee Jed' and 'Friend of the Devil
Rolling Stone : By Patrick Doyle March 28, 2011
When Furthur hit the stage for their third consecutive headlining show
at Radio City Music Hall last night (and their eighth show in New York
City this month), surprises were expected. But it's safe to say everyone
was shocked when, after two songs, Elvis Costello sprinted out wearing a
navy checkerboard suit, silver hat and thick-rimmed glasses strapped on
an acoustic guitar and fronted the band on a stomping, joyous rendition
of "Tennessee Jed," trading verses with guest guitarist Larry Campbell
in front of vintage psychedelic visuals. Afterwards, he waved to the
crowd, appearing he was leaving the stage, but simply took a sip of
water and headed back to the mic, where he stayed for the majority of
the first set.
Costello and the Dead may sound like a weird pairing, but
they have some history; Costello and Jerry Garcia sang country songs
together at a 1989 show in Mill Valley, California. Last night, Costello
easily adapted to the band's loose sensibilities. He delivered an
uplifting "Friend of the Devil" and then turned into a balladeer on a
13-minute jam of 1973’s "Ship of Fools," which shifted into the boozy
sing-along "It Must Have Been the Roses," with Larry Campbell adding
soaring fiddle – and then seamlessly moved back to "Ship of Fools."
Costello covered the two songs acoustically on 2000’s Stolen Roses
tribute disc, but hearing him belt over Lesh and Weir’s wall-of-sound
sounded otherworldly. Costello capped the set duetting with wife Diana
Krall on a gorgeous "Ripple."
The 10-song set two was performed without Costello, and included
impassioned performances of "St. Stephen," "UncleJohn’s Band" and
"Morning Dew," delivered excellently by guitarist John Kadlecik. Weir
and Lesh have been playing some of the songs for four decades, but it
was amazing how aggressively they are still willing to break the mold of
the studio recordings. For the encore, about three hours after first
emerging, Costello emerged with Krall and sang the blues classic
"Fever," Costello jabbing screeching high notes out of his black Les
Paul next to Weir. To close out the night, they invited Teresa Williams
out and all harmonized American Beauty’s prayer "Attics of my Life."

Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.
