Rod Stewart Sessions
Rod Stewart Sessions
Rod has released a 4CD box set of unreleased tracks. Some are versions of classics, some never saw the light of day at all. One tracks is The Long Journey Home written by Elvis and Paddy Maloney of The Chieftains. And a very nice job Rod made of it too.

It's pretty epic alright. 'Net sources don't give much of the personnel details for the tracks but do list ' Wicklow, Ireland' in the recording locations. What sounds like uillean pipes do feature so maybe a Chieftain or two might be involved.
From a 'disc of highlights nicked from downloads a highlight is ' It's Coming Out Your Cheque' , a 'hidden' track on the end of disc 2 , in which Rod 'n co. savage various Warner Bros. Records executives. One Thomas Ruffino really gets a going over.

Wasn't Elvis involved in song selection for Rod's 1998 album When We Were The New Boys, suggesting the Nick Lowe and Ron Sexsmith songs? I wonder if he suggested his own song too.

Re: Rod Stewart Sessions
He was. They met at an awards show around then and Rod told Elvis words to the effect that Elvis songwriting was too clever for his own good & thats why none of his songs made the finished 'Boys album. This track may be an outtake from then & kind of supports Rods point, IMO. Since he learnt how to read music, Elvis knack for a good simple melody has rarely surfaced.
