Traincha covers Burt Bacharach/Elvis Costello songs

Post by sweetest punch »

Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis (called "Traincha" in the rest of the world) has recorded a Burt Bacharach Songbook album with the Metropole Orchestra.

The album features her version of This House Is Empty Now. It's a great version and a great album.

It’s not often that you hear of an artist doing all of your music in one album. I’ve always approached it with some trepidation and anxiety. This album by Trijntje exceeds my wildest expectations. This all started with a disc & a DVD sent to me by her record company thru my music publisher. I watched the DVD, listened to the disc and I was blown away, my kids were blown away She wanted to come to LA and asked me to play on 2 tracks, my choice. I picked Waiting For Charlie To Come Home (an old hit of Etta James) and This House Is Empty Now, a song written with Elvis Costello for the Painted From Memory album. She was in total agreement. I loved recording with her , she is so damn good and so musical. The album is finished. Pat Williams and Vince Mendoza wrote glorious arrangements, Al Schmitt, one of our greatest engineers in the world, flew out to record and mix it — how great is that? I am very proud of the work, Trijntje should be. She is shining thru. Consider her a national treasure.

Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis is working on a second album with Burt Bacharach. It will contain God Give Me Strenght.

http://www.bluenote.nl/page/artiest/3768/

Trijntje Oosterhuis en Burt Bacharach bundelen voor een tweede maal de krachten op het nieuwe album van Trijntje Oosterhuis: Who’ll Speak For Love (Burt Bacharach Songbook II).

Thanks Punch - I've just ordered a copy via the Free Shop link used earlier in this thread for the last album. Trijntje version of This House Is Empty Now is vastly superior to Elvis 'n Burts'. When I first played it last year I listened , for the first time in a while , to PFM . It has not aged well. Elvis' vocal is , for the most part, way to high pitched and there is far too much use of keyboards. There are some great tunes on it , waiting to be more ably performed. In getting Trijntje to perform This House.. Burt is , perhaps, admitting this.

The above site now has audioclips. GGMS and PFM sound great.

On the next website you can see a late night show where Trijntje Oosterhuis is interviewed. You can see also a short video of Trijntje working with the 80-year old Burt Bacharach. In this interview she tells that the title song is a new song that Burt has written for her (lyrics are by Tim Rice).
The fragment starts at 19:15 minutes into the show.

Who'll Speak for Love

Trijntje Oosterhuis ( 2007)

Trijntje Oosterhuis has, yet again , totally resuscitated two PFM songs. GGMS is delivered in a very even manner , the vocal having just that right amount of jadedness to make you believe the songs message. Whereas Elvis' original works best , usually live , if you engage with the song from the start , building up to the shrieked 'hurt' , this version has a more subtle approach.

The real highlight is Painted From Memory. Starting with swirling strings, arranged by Vince Mendoza , it eases into a gorgeous harp, played by Joke Schonewille , piece and another world weary vocal. Yet again it totally revives the song. Elvis' version is blighted by a ridiculously high pitched vocal and swamped by a syrupy string arrangement by Johnny Mandel. I've just played it for the first time in a while and it is just awful compared with this. Interestingly, Bill Frisell's Sweetest Punch version ( just Bill on guitar with Cassandra Wilson's vocal) seems , also on a re-listen,like a template for Ms Oosterhuis's recording.

What with Burt's involvement , along with past Costello collaborators The Metropole Orkest ( and being mixed by My Flame Burns Blue's Al Schmitt) this disc has to have had , however indirect, Elvis' involvement. That we are , just like her version ( with similar imput) last year of This House Is Empty Now, getting such radical re-interpretations probably means that he has accepted the deficiencies of the PFM album and is glad to facilitate this, partial, remake.

I see it's recorded at ' MCO , Hilversum' ; somewhere near/ the same as Get Happy!! 's Wisselloord , perhaps?

By the way, the album's final track 'On My Own' really stirred up some ghosts for me. I had no idea Burt wrote ( with Carole Bayer Sager ) this 1980's hit ( by Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald). Trijntje's version is , again restrained , not much more than a vocal with guitar ( by Peter Tiehuis) . Listening to it I was , however, just awash with memories of fall down drunk nights in tacky Dublin nightclubs, drinking to forget a job I hated. The song is just about saved this time , serving to re-enforce my present good fortune.

I can't stop listening to this album. The version of Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head is radically different to any other performance I've heard. It's sung in a very low key and very slowly , bringing out a pathos I've never heard in it before.

Traincha (Trijntje) has a live CD and live DVD out in a few days: It's acoustic, with just voice and guitar. The BB/EC songs that are included here are: Painted From Memory and This House Is Empty Now.

This Girl's in Love

1 Jun 2009

A U.K. edition of this has appeared, a selection from both of the Dutch albums, including This House Is Empty Now and God Give Me Strength , therefore, sadly, excluding Painted From Memory.

RTÉ Concert Orchestra & Big Band
Vince Mendoza conductor
Trijntje Oosterhuis vocalist

An annual standout concert, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra’s New Year’s Eve Gala is by now something of an institution.

This year one multi-Grammy-winner pays tribute to another as Vince Mendoza conducts the RTÉ Concert Orchestra & Big Band in a celebration of Burt Bacharach.

Bacharach is a legend of popular music. He and lyricist Hal David created many of the classic songs that provided the soundtrack to our lives over the past 50 years. An extraordinary career has been marked by 48 Top 10 hits, nine number 1 songs, three Academy Awards and seven Grammy Awards (including the 1997 Trustees Award with Hal David).

Composer-arranger-conductor Vince Mendoza is one of the most highly regarded figures on the international music scene today, and has written arrangements for artists including Joni Mitchell (for whom he arranged the the Grammy-winning album Both Sides Now in 2000), Sting, Melody Gardot, Elvis Costello, Björk, John Scofield and Charlie Haden. In 2006 he and top Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis recorded an album of Bacharach covers as a homage. Mendoza did the orchestral arrangements and Bacharach himself played piano for two of the tracks. The album, The Look of Love, was certified platinum on the day of release.

Tonight Vince Mendoza and Trijntje Oosterhuis join the RTÉ Concert Orchestra & Big Band to bring the album to life with timeless songs like The Look of Love, I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, Walk On By, Close to You and Anyone Who Had a Heart.

A classy way to see in the New Year.

At a New Year's eve show here in Dublin I was lucky enough to see Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis with a orchestra doing Burt Bacharach songs. The conductor was Vince Mendoza, Elvis's arranger for his shows and recording's with the Metropole Orkest. They did thrilling versions of Painted From Memory & God Give Me Strength. Adding to the glamour and the glitz of the occasion a temporary power failure meant Trijntje had to sing part of The Look Of Love without amplification , which she did brilliantly, A great start to the New Year!

Bacharach heeft kasten vol prijzen voor klassiekers als That's what friends are for, Raindrops keep falling on my head en The Look of Love.

Trijntje (Traincha) will record new material by Burt Bacharach

Trijntje Oosterhuis is still in contact with composer Burt Bacharach and even wants to record a new record with him. The Dutch singer has already made several very successful albums with the American musician and also accompanied him on one of his world tours.

"He is still writing new songs and recently sent me some songs again," said Trijntje in an interview on NPO Radio 5. "I am listening to them and I actually want to start recording again." The singer describes the songs as "very special, it is a very different style from what he used to write".

Oosterhuis recorded two albums with work by Bacharach fifteen years ago after he made contact with her because he liked her to sing so well. Since then, the two have always kept in touch. "The last time I saw him was at North Sea Jazz last summer, when we performed together," said Trijntje on NPO Radio 5.

Dressing room

"In the dressing room we chatted then: shall we make part 3? The wish is there. But we have to wait and see how the corona situation is going now. Maybe we should do it remotely, both in our own studio." Bacharach is one of the most important living American composers. He has been writing songs for all of the great artists on Earth for over seventy years: from Dionne Warwick to Dusty Springfield, from Tom Jones to the Carpenters. Bacharach has cabinets full of prizes for classics like That's what friends are for, Raindrops keep falling on my head and The Look of Love.
