Power of three

A couple of songwriting legends named Dylan and Costello perform tonight at the Cumberland County Civic Center, along with up-and-comer Amos Lee.

STEPHANIE BOUCHARD, News Assistant October 4, 2007

At first glance, the pairing of Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello on
tour may seem odd, but, says local singer/songwriter Jason
Spooner (who was one of the performers participating in
Warwick, New York's A Tribute to Bob Dylan Festival last May),
when you really think about it, it's not so strange. "When you
really dip into their (Dylan's and Costello's) records," Spooner
reflects as he munches on a sandwich in a Portland coffeehouse,
"they share an inability to be pigeonholed."

Dylan and Costello perform at the Cumberland County Civic
Center in Portland tonight. Dylan is on tour this fall in support of
his newly-released three-CD retrospective, "Dylan." Dylan is
performing with his band while Costello and Philadelphia-based
singer/songwriter Amos Lee open as solo acts.

Spooner hits the nail on the head when he says the two artists
can't be defined by tidy labels.

Dylan's 45-year career has found him creating and performing
folk, rock and country-rock, writing songs ranging from serious
and wry reflections on society to his personal life to spirituals.

Costello's star began to rise in the late 1970s, when he broke
musical ground with his punk/new wave sound. Costello has
covered country rock, pop, jazz, and American roots. The "All
Music Guide" calls Costello "one of the most innovative,
influential and best songwriters since Bob Dylan."

Dylan and Costello, Spooner continues, have "a real commitment
to exploration and challenging themselves." As a result of their
commitment, Dylan and Costello are two of the most influential
songwriters of modern times. Both have received innumerable
awards and honors for their music and compositions -- and,
maybe more markedly, they have inspired countless singer/
songwriters to push their own boundaries -- Jason Spooner
among them.

Spooner, who celebrated his 34th birthday on Tuesday, has a
reputation in Portland and across the country as a songwriter
with a voice. After listening to Spooner's debut album, "Lost
Houses," singer/songwriter Christine Lavin said she got the
feeling she was listening to someone important. Among his
many accomplishments, Spooner was one of five winners of
Mountain Stage's Newsong Contest last month, and he's been a
finalist of the Kerrville Folk Festival and the John Lennon
Songwriting Competition. He's in the running as a finalist of the
Starbucks/NEMO Music Festival, which takes place in Boston
next week. His sophomore album, "The Flame You Follow,"
released last June, is gaining national radio play.

Spooner, who is performing at Brian Boru in Portland tonight,
hopes to catch some of the Dylan/Costello concert. It's a show
that is unique, not only because it brings together two
songwriting powerhouses, but also because it showcases three
generations of modern songwriting.

Costello did a nice short (40-minute) opening set with a few "hit" numbers, some lesser-known, but fun ones (a nice singalong medley of "Radio Sweetheart" and "Jackie Wilson Said"), and a whole bunch of brand new songs that I think frustrated some of the crowd. When he called out, "You seem like a friendly crowd, would you like to hear another new one?" there was a big "YEAH!" from the house followed by several clear, individual statements of "No!" So he premiered a song he hadn't done in public yet, co-written with Loretta Lynn, from the point of view of a first wife to her ex's new wife - and as it goes along you realize that the first wife is The First Wife, Eve. Good one.

Meantime, Costello came out snarling.

Armed with an array of acoustic guitars, Costello burned through a 45-minute set that reminded people why he’s considered one of the most influential artists of his generation. He engaged the audience, introduced new material and paid attention to some of his best-known older songs: “Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoesâ€
