Description
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I truly hope this is as much a real treat for all of you as it has been
for so many years for me. A very intimate moment with Elvis Costello
solo at Avery Fisher Hall @ Lincoln Center in Manhattan. (For those who
don’t know, Avery Fisher Hall is where the New York Philharmonic plays.
Rarely do you see any kind of R ‘n R music there, it is almost
exclusively used for classical music.) Just as a great philharmonic hall
should be, acoustics are perfect in just about every seat. I recall being
about 2/3 the way back of the orchestra somewhere towards the left side
of center as you face the stage, but this recording sounds just like I
was within the first ten rows.

As my ticket stub shows, T-Bone Burnett was the opener. In hindsight I
now regret not recording his set, though I have absolutely no
recollection of it at all. But this was not the first time I missed recording
an opening act that later on proved to be something worthwhile. Oh
well.

As for Elvis, the lights went down and he came on stage very fast. I
just had enough time to turn on my cassette deck (always the first step
in the process), but you will hear me setting up my mics for a few
seconds at the start of the show. Unfortunately, even back in 1984 one of
the occupational hazzards of stealth recording was that you could not
walk into the venue ready to roll tape, you have to be discrete to get
past the door, and of course remain out of sight of the over zealous
ushers who seat you, not to mention any road crew who might be milling
about the crowd. Thus there was always a few seconds of set up time
required at the start of any show, especially after the lights go down so
that you can expose your mic’s for optimum sound. Some performers give
you more time than others once the lights go down, others don’t. On
this occasion Elvis moved very fast, why I don’t know. My Sony Walkman D6
(original model) also had only one level meter that was shared by
the both channels - the louder of the two being the one that
registered, so you never really knew if both mics were working all the time, and
I’ve had a few mono mistakes. As there was but one stereo mini plug
input a Y cord patch was needed for usage of two mics in order to get a
proper stereo recording. You may hear an occasional finger snap into
each mic during a break between songs, where I could check to make sure
both mics were actually working, as by prior experience there were
occasions where a connection comes apart, so you had to be sure ....another
occupational hazzard.

This is Elvis all alone and virtually unplugged in a way most of you
have probably never heard before. Elvis does a brief introduction of his
accompanists - his “Army of Guitars.” If I recall correctly there were
at least 10 guitars on stage. Most are acoustic, there are a few songs
he plays on an electric guitar, and yes Elvis even plays his own
keyboards on a couple of songs. Voice wise, many have always viewed Elvis as
a great crooner. On this account you will not be disappointed as this
show has probably the best vocal tracks of any Elvis show I ever heard.
I guess that’s because you can actually hear him sing without the
“distraction” of a band behind him.

Most of this show was played on acoustic guitar so you must be
forewarned, the actual sound level of this show was very low and relatively
unamplified. This means I had to turn my record levels up to get a fuller
recording, which in turn makes for some very loud crowd noise in
between songs during applause. It will startle you at first, but on the
whole is not problematic, and will not ruin your enjoyment of this
excellent recording. Rather in my opinion it makes you feel all the more like
you are actually there. For a NYC crowd you will be surprised at just
how quiet they were during the playing of the actual music, which makes
this a fantastic recording on that account. But I guarantee you will
enjoy this show best if you play it LOUD, so you capture every minute
detail.

Total time of this show is just shy of 83 min, which means it will
require 2 CD’s. I have broken this into two 40+ min CD’s, which
coincidentally coincide with where I flipped the cassette. Funny how that break
made for a natural split into two CD’s so many years later.

This recording has never before been released by me and is in the hands
of fewer than 5 close friends, none of whom have the desire or ability
to release it. Please spread it wide and far, but please keep the gene
pool clean and don’t distribute it in lossy formats such as MP3.

Hope you all enjoy this show as much as I have all these years. I rate
this a 7 on EZT’s scale of 5, but it’s my recording and I admit my
bias, so I look forward to each of you posting your favorable ratings as
soon as you have had the opportunity to hear this.
