Life is immeasurably better with a dog alongside you, even if they're cretinously thick and smell. Smelvis looks like a beaut!

Ahhh, poor Elvis! Poor you! I'm sure he was a good loyal Lab - they're such great pets! Will you get another?

Thanks Otis. He was always a good boy and got as much love as he gave - I'll be missing him for a lifetime.

We will get another dog and probably soon; I'm not sure what kind though.

My condolences BWAP. Never easy to lose a longtime pet.

Rudy is four this year, so it seems a long way off. I can't bear to think about it. The ending of Marley and Me (the book) was almost too much for me to handle.

What can you follow a Lab with? I'd like a super smart dog (the reputation Choccy Labs have for thickness is well deserved in Rudy's case), but I couldn't do with any less unswerving loyalty and affection, and good comedy value too.

How old was he?

Sorry to hear about Elvis, I was just thinking about him the other day. I don't think he really enjoyed his time England, and certainly didn't take to me or my clan - which shows a certain amount of good taste.

Thanks Sam and So Lackustre -

The climate in England was really good for him - the mild temperatures helped his arthritis. No, he was not a big fan of So Lackustre or little miss Lacklustre - I think he liked Mrs. Lacklustre ok. And he really really liked his Bakers dog food (rabbit and duck) which we couldn't get over here. He tended either to love people quickly or take an instant dislike to them (more often the latter) - the same as his owner - though I don't usually go in for the butt sniffing on first encounter (you normally need to buy people a drink first). He was eleven Otis - I don't know what kind of breed we would get next, but probably someone much smaller.

Read my words! I kept well away from the film. the book was wonderful, though, and deeply emotional at the end for a dog owner.

Our Rudy was in dog heaven today, cavorting on a Norfolk beach with hordes of other dogs, writhing around in dried seaweed trying to the sand of his face and romping around the sand dunes.

I've tried to explain to him, but he hasn't quite taken it on board: he's going to have the best two weeks of his life this year: instead of the kennels, we're renting dog-friendly cottages in Yorkshire and Scotland (no exchange rate!) and he will spend all his days romping around hillsides and loch shores. I feel so happy for him.

sorry to hear about that, BWAP. He looks like he was a goodun.

Davis has a sister now, Scout (a choc lab), who is 7 weeks old. They spent the weekend with us and I don't think that puppy's feet hit the ground (other than potty drops) once the entire time she was there. There is no cute like puppy cute.

His mom is a cocker spaniel and his dad is a poodle. He is a cockapoo - or a spoodle as they say in Australia. He's a pretty funny guy.

My uncle's dog Rosie is a cockapoo. Lovely dog and a great temperament.

Sounds like a deviant practice. Gorgeous pup! Well done.

Just seen the Choc Lab, Moody. MostLabs a re bit dim, but chocs excel in the thickness department. But they are so gorgeous. Rudy is a wonderful specimen. That photo takes me back.

...a test to see if I can actually figure out how to post photos.
Here is one of my girls, the lovely Theda Bara...

We got her from a shelter. I am told she is a Catahoula Leopard Dog, or more likely a Catahoula Mix. A sweeter or more charming dog I have never met, although she did not come with an "off switch".

Lovely! Never heard of a Catahoula. I like the black cat looking on in alarm! Your house looks cool, lots of interesting things, as one would expect from your artwork!

Where does the name Theda Bara come from?

Hi Otis!
Thanks for your nice comments!
Theda Bara was a silent movie queen, who I fear is largely forgotten today. I thought the resemblance was uncanny...

The cat is Baron Chuffy Chuffnell, and he always looks furious/horrified, mostly because Theda devotes a lot of time to herding him under chairs and tables.

I had never heard of Catahoulas either, but I found out they come from Louisiana and are the oldest indigenous breed in the US. They are not recognized by the AKC, so I guess they are largely unknown. Apparently, they can be trained to climb trees and God help me if she ever figures that trick out!
