The Best Things in Life are Free!

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

If you can get yourself outside tonight take in a relatively rare astronomical event= a super moon. It is the closest it has been to the earth in 18 years and it corresponds with a full moon so it will be quite impressive. Hopefully this little number will inspire you to view it:

I drove home from work a different way on Saturday night so I could take in some open sky.
The moon belongs to everyone, but it seemed to be mine alone last night!

The moon is spectacular this evening as I drove home past the farm fields here in Southern Dutchess County- the sky was clear and the moon rising was something to behold unfortunately not the full lunar eclipse that my daughter was treated to in Taipei, Taiwan- only fair that it happen on the 181st anniversary of the birth of Emily Dickinson[December 10, 1830]. This came immediately to mind for me in the car:

The moon was but a chin of gold
A night or two ago,
And now she turns her perfect face
Upon the world below.

Her forehead is of amplest blond;
Her cheek like beryl stone;
Her eye unto the summer dew
The likest I have known.

Her lips of amber never part;
But what must be the smile
Upon her friend she could bestow
Were such her silver will!

And what a privilege to be
But the remotest star!
For certainly her way might pass
Beside your twinkling door.

Her bonnet is the firmament,
The universe her shoe,
The stars the trinkets at her belt,
Her dimities of blue.

Emily Dickinson

Very much enjoyed the perigee last night as the moon slid in and out of the rippled bands of clouds over the mountain above my house. Looking forward to enjoying it again tonight in all its fullness and glory, the largest of the year, as these words of Auden's fill my head. My eldest daughter turns 25 on Tuesday half a world away and my thought for her is that this same moon keep watch over her and in the countless years to come that I am wishing for her. Twenty five years ago it was a lullaby to bring her peace-now I will settle for a soothing night song-such has flown the minutes and hours and days and years:

Nocturne

Make this night loveable,
Moon, and with eye single
Looking down from up there,
Bless me, One especial
And friends everywhere.

With a cloudless brightness
Surround our absences;
Innocent be our sleeps,
Watched by great still spaces,
White hills, glittering deeps.

Parted by circumstance,
Grant each your indulgence
That we may meet in dreams
For talk, for dalliance,
By warm hearths, by cool streams.

Shine lest tonight any,
In the dark suddenly,
Wake alone in a bed
To hear his own fury
Wishing his love were dead.

Make sure you give yourself a chance to enjoy another 'super' moon this evening. Should be a memorable perigee moment.
