Random Thoughts

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

'shameful' chicanery- but it worked and, most importantly, has me laughing!

Sad news today- comforted with the thought that these were two boxers who, for one brief period in time, truly tested themselves against each other-I remember those three fights vividly.

Today's goal: find a new profile pic. Just realized I put this up during #1 son's wedding festitivies on 10-10-10. It is now 11-11-11. Damn.

It's Remembrance Day here where we wear poppies to honour those who have had their lives taken from them do that we have freedom.

You could put a temporary profile pic up just for today.

I don't wear a poppy. I always found the whole thing somewhat fake, even though the actual symbol of the poppy is deeply moving. But now that anything at all commemorating war is wrapped up with all this jingoistic bollocks about 'heroes', I most certainly don't want to be associated with it. Sentimental comic book pap about action heroes takes away the focus on the realities of the political issues, and reinforces a notion of some moral crusade.

Whether or not you wear a poppy is of course your choice. The important thing is to remember those whose lives have been cut short.

Wrong thread sweetie - the song titles thread is that way!

Been to see mini VGs almost certain primary school today which she'll start next September. It was the school where me, my brother and my nephews went and currently go to.

The open day was very enjoyable. However I'll be no doubt excitedly/upsettingly posting next September when she starts.

As if I needed a calendar to remind me of the time of year-having been enticed the last three weeks by unseasonable days- late fall is here and boy is it dreary, dank and dark!

Gone cold here and something is lodged in my throat/head. Then again, I had a cold plum sake as a dessert wine this evening - that should see me through!

Didn't help sadly. Effort to get through an all-day discussion meeting, followed by 2.5 hours of drumming at band practice tonight, but then again even when wrecked, drumming tends to help the health along. Good for the immune system and serotonin levels.

Do they prefer their eggs beaten, poached, scrambled, fried or unfertilised?

I found out today that Mrs VG's cousin has been chosen as one of the people to carry the Olympic torch next year. How fantastic! And he was nominated by his sister. I bet she gets the best Christmas present ever!

Ah! I knew it had a name. "NFL stuff" is way cooler, however.

On behalf of the Bible Belt, you're forgiven. :) Of course, many of the people here and south of here would be terrified if I were speaking for them. I'm just as out of place as any visitor.

Anyway.

My all-time favorite Christmas album is "Christmas" by Singers Unlimited. I realize it may not satisfy everybody's musical taste buds, but it really is brilliant. I'm sure it's one that can be found on the cheap, and it's well worth the listen.

Someone I used to play with was part of this project. It's a seven-song album that was just posted online the other day, and it's downloadable for free. It's all traditional Christmas songs, but the music really is quite beautiful. Really beautiful, actually.

Do not know how radical these would be to your ears but I and my family have fun with these three:

"Let's Sing a Song of Christmas"- Spike Jones on Verve Records
"We Three Kings" - The Roches MCA Records might be my favorite holiday record
"The McGarrigle Christmas Hour"- The McGarrigles Nonesuch Records - more obscure choices and renditions

do not know if they will help but they are the ones I repeatedly return to each year.
