Elvis/Rachel Sweet
Elvis/Rachel Sweet
I just got the picture disc of this obscure Costello related item for 5 euro at a market stall here in Dublin -
http://www.bobbyshred.com/rachelsweet.html
' She cut a few country singles in Nashville at age fourteen. The following year she was "discovered" by producer Liam Sternberg, who got her a deal do do her first album "Fool Around". The label Stiff Records was known for its early punk core music of Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, and Ian Dury and The Blockheads.
Producer Sternberg assigned The Blockheads to be Rachel's band. Sounding youthful but savvy beyond her years the album "Fool Around" propelled her into a cult status that remains strong today. Belting out the songs "B-A-B-Y","Who Does Lisa Like", she blows you away with the moxie of a true professional, with just enough girlish charm to stay as sweet as her name. Crooning "Wildwood Saloon","I Go To Pieces", or Elvis Costello's "Stranger in the House" she can tug on your heart. '
FOOL AROUND
UK Stiff SEEZ 12 (on white vinyl and black vinyl - LP) - 1978

JP Victor VIP-6612 (Japanese LP) - 1979
Tracks:

Who Does Lisa Like
Wildwood Saloon
Stay Awhile
Suspended Animation
It's So Different Here
Cuckoo Clock

I bought this when it came out. White vinyl, I recall. Lost it years ago, but this post has prompted me to buy a Best of compilation from Amazon.

Re: Elvis/Rachel Sweet
I have a copy of Fool Around on cassette around here, somewhere......I remember it being pleasant enough, with a few songs that I really liked - like Lene Lovich's "guest appearance" on Cuckoo Clock (LL sure could scream ) Hmmmm, whatever became of Lene ??? Saw her many many many years back, with Thomas Dolby handling keyboard duties......good show.
I had a terrible crush on Rachel Sweet at the time based largely on the back cover photo and was lucky enough to hear her open (a little too far back to really see her) for Graham Parker & the Rumour at my very first real concert.
Before doing "Stranger in the House" she proclaimed Elvis her favorite songwriter.
"Fool Around" had some filler, but it was a fun album , back cover aside. Particularly liked her version of Hayes and Porter's "B-A-B-Y", which is nearly as good as Alex Chilton's cover. And do I remember a duet with Lene Lovich in there someplace??? I also remember Brinsley Schwarz doing some very nice guitar work on that one.
Since then, Ms. Sweet has become a writer ("producer" being TV speak for a staff writer) on several shows, including "Dharma & Greg" and Aaron Sorkin's "Sports Night."
For more....

I have the Best of CD that Rhino put out a few years ago and a bootleg of the Bottom Line show in '79 -
Her vocal style is similar to Neko Case and Amy Allison - she made some pretty poor choices on material after the first couple of records - the duet with Rex Smith is particularly horrible.
My favorites are Who Does Lisa Like, Fools Gold, Pin A Medal On Mary and Stranger in the House.
One of the more cruel things that Stiff Records did was make a bunch of their artists record the Devo song "Be Stiff" - I have versions by RS and Wreckless Eric - did Elvis do a version?
Here's another cool website -
